Closing Attachments in iPad Mail

How do you close an Attachment once opened in Mail. I can close it initially, but once I scroll down and the menu bar goes away, I cant get it back.

iPad, iPhone OS 3.1.3

Touch the top of the screen regardless of orientation. Push the blue done button on the top left, and you will be back to your email message.

I have a similar problem with closing attachments specifically with a keynote that I mailed to myself (the import feature through iTunes wasn't working). I tapped everywhere and the "Done" button just wouldn't pop up. I had to shut down the iPad and restart it.

I usually don't have trouble with other attachments, so I'm thinking maybe there's a very specific spot I need to tap.

Also, on a related topic: Is it possible to open an attachment directly using another program, without going through Mail?

No way to open an email attachment without getting to it through email.There are programs like Air Sharing HD that let you choose to open in their environment, save it there, and from there, open it with related application.

When you have an attachment open in Pages, Keynote or Numbers, I have found you have to hold the device in Portrait mode for the "Menu" bar to show where you can then click on the My Documents button and close the document...

I have had this problem myself a few times - in fact I am having it right now. Like Aaron I do not usually have this problem but when it happens its unrecoverable without restarting the iPad entirely. Quit & relaunch Mail? It just goes right back to the attachment preview. Definitely a bug in Mail that the control bar with the Done button is not reappearing in this situation.

It MIGHT be the case that this happens only if I first previewed the attachment in Mail and THEN chose to "open with" another app. But as I say I don't have 100% repro steps at this point...

Confirming that I also have the same problem. Can't close the attachment once opening in an application (in my case Pages). The workaround using Search to find another email works, but this is a definite bug...

Try tapping the attachment using two fingers with one touching the opened document and the other on the black edge (the frame) of the screen. You will se the 'Done' appearing again for you to tap and exit.

I had the same with a PDF attachment.
Just double-tap in the middle of the screen and the blue "Done" button will reappear.

Has anyone tried just closing to the home screen then shutting mail down in the fast app switching toolbar (pressing home button twice then holding down on an app and pressing the minus sign on mail)?

I find I get the Done button by tapping once with one finger at the top of the screen.

Definitely a bug though

Aaron,

Just touch the blue bar that is highlighting for example "Last Name" column, "First Name" column, etc. Then the Done button will appear.
