The warranty terms for a MacBook are different that those for the iPad, so you cannot extrapolate from your experience. Unlike the warranty for a Mac, the iPad's warranty statement says:

"Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the hardware product. "

so worldwide coverage is not guaranteed. In addition, even if Apple would intend to honor the iPad warranty in other countries, until the iPad is released in a given country there may be no service and support resources in place.

So anyone purchasing an iPad in the US to take back to another country should be aware that they bear a risk of not being able to obtain service in their home country, at least as of right now.

The point is that international service is not guaranteed, particularly before the iPad is released outside of the US. So anyone buying one here and taking it to another country needs to know that they may not be able to get service.

What does the iPhone warranty say?

The iPhone warranty statement has exactly the same statement:

"Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally sold the hardware product"

So anyone assuming an international warranty may be unpleasantly surprised, though we can hope not. I wouldn't want to gamble on it, though, in absence of any official statement from Apple clarifying the matter.

Your warranty is good in Canada. I had my two US MacBook cases fixed at the Yorkdale Apple Store. One took one day and the other two hours.

If you stay gone a week, you can bring it back without paying taxes.

I think you are reading too much into that. With the integrated 3G, they may have to restrict "service" to a particular country. The warranty is still good. If a local store won't work on a "foreign" device, you can always mail it back to Apple for service. What does the iPhone warranty say? Contrary to popular opinion, Apple isn't going to inconvenience customers unless they have a good and valid reason.

I think that iMacs also have a country specific warranty. I bought one for my parents who live in Canada (I live in the US), and Apple first told me that the warranty would not be covered, and after talking to other employees in the back of the Apple store, he said that it would because Canada was in the same region as the US.

Of course, the person I talked to didn't seem to really know much about it, so it is very possible that I was given incorrect information.
