Apple TV video seems choppy on my new 1080p HDTV

I recently purchased an apple tv and a Samsung 1080p 120hz HDTV. I have the video from the ATV going to the TV via HDMI cord.

I have the apple tv set to display the video at 1080p.

Every 10 seconds or so during the video it seems like it pauses for a brief second, like the video is trying to catch up or there is a delay somewhere? Any suggestions? Is this caused by the upscaling or is there a setting wrong somewhere?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Unfortunately, there have been a lot of complaints about ATV HDMI glitches with Samsung TVs over the years.

You might try setting the ATV video output to 720p and see if you still get the choppy video. If you have an A/V receiver with HDMI ports, you might also try going through that to see if it will mitigate the problem.

Of course, if you recently purchased your ATV, you could exchange it for another unit that will hopefully work better with your TV.

If you don't want to do any of the above and your TV has composite inputs or a DVI input, you could connect it with component cables or an HDMI to DVI cable and then run the audio separately.

And I'm running a Dell XPS1640 laptop (my next home computer will probably be a Mac! I'm not quite there yet! Go easy on me!)

The question I have.. in light of the challenges with the Samsung mentioned in this thread.. has anyone had any luck using a sony bravia lcd+ Dell laptop with iTunes and Apple TV? I'm ready to darn the torpedoes and give this all a try in about a month.. just trying to do a bit a research and avoid making some bad buying decisions. Anyone have any opinions!? Much thanks in advance!

I've seen a few reports of HDMI glitches with some model Bravias, but I also have HDMI glitches with my Sharp. The source of the problem is the ATV, not the TVs. ATV HDMI glitches rank up there with wifi dropouts and the iTunes disappearing act as the most frequently reported problems.

In any case, if you like the system you've picked out, I'd say go for it. You may not have any ATV problems. If you do, there are ways to work around them.

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.

I spend a lot of time in these forums (despite a recent absence), I have not seen any complaints about Samsung tv's for some considerable time. A couple of years ago Samsung had issues with the HDMI cards on some tv models. I understand they acknowledged this and swapped out the faulty cards under warranty. I don't believe Samsung has such a problem anymore.

I don't have a Sony TV or a Dell laptop. However I would be extremely surprised if any tv currently manufactured wouldn't work with the Apple tv. As for Sony themselves, they have a very good name, indeed they are usually regarded as producing quality merchandise (indeed they are generally held in a similar esteem to Apple).

The Dell shouldn't be a problem so long as it runs itunes, there isn't a great deal of additional processing required by the addition of an Apple tv, so assuming your Dell isn't underprivileged when it comes to horsepower, it should be good to go.

One note of caution though, it seems that not all home theatre systems are happy to pass HDMI/HDCP between the Apple tv and the tv, you might want to look for people using the home theatre system you intend purchasing and ensure that all is well for them.

Do a keyword search for "Samsung" in this forum and you'll come up with about twenty posts just within the past 90 days.

21 to be precise, but I got 30 for Sony and LG, and don't forget these are posts not threads, mention your Samsung tv 3 times in a thread and it counts for 3. Two of the posts you linked to were solved and two seemed to relate to an amplifier rather than the tv. I do see posts relating to HDMI/HDCP but it doesn't appear to me that any one tv/manufacturer clocks up the majority of them.

MisterQuint,

You might want to re-consider the Bose. Unless you absolutely need to own a Bose, I tell folks who want quality audio to look at better options. For your research, you can join the discussions at this very popular site: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=109

You'll get better bang for your bucks from HTIB by Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha.

Don't mean to be OT; maybe you need to ask in another thread.

cheers!

Try turning off Samsung's Auto Motion Plus and see what happens. Or, try using different HDMI cable and or different TV HDMI port. There really should be no reason for the video pauses due to the TV. You can also try this: connect your PC or a video camera to your TV HDMI port and play a video. Do you observe pauses? If not, the likely source is your Apple TV.
