What is compatibility mode

Hi,

In iPad programming guide, starting your project article, "However, because it runs iPhone OS, it is possible to port existing iPhone applications so that they run natively on an iPad, and not in compatibility mode.", what is compatibility mode here? Any comments on this.

I'm thinking it means an iPhone app that will run unchanged on the iPad but will not take advantage of any of the iPad's features, like the big screen.
