Is Quick Look secure?

Ever cautious about mail attachments, could anyone advise if 'quick look' is secure and if I can use it with less caution than I apply to attachments in general. I do receive quite a lot of mail from Windows users.

Hello Matthew,

Apologies for the delay. What prompted the question came from a decision I had to make about a particular email with an attachment. Had I known the sender I would have simply clicked the attachment. But I didn't. I chose quick look ... then spent several minutes pondering if it had been malicious would quick look have passed it or warned me ... or what?

Quick Look does as its name suggests, allowing you to quickly look at a file without actually opening or even having the application that edits the file. It is not just in Mail. It can also be done in the Finder, and perhaps other applications, since it seems to be a system-level service.

It has never been a tool for protecting against malicious attachments in Mail.

Thank you, Matthew,

I do hope I am not harping unnecessarily on the subject but as far as mail is concerned I had previously thought that with Mac it was generally safe to open mail ... but care was needed in respect of attachments. Reading your reply suggests that if I can look at a file without actually opening it, it must at that point be as safe as the mail it came with ... as it is opening doubtful attachments that I want to avoid.

Please forgive the persistence; I'm sure there are others who need to define the distinction for themselves.

I agree with the answers here, that QuickLook is a simple application on Mac that allows you to look at (as it says) the attachment without actually executing it or opening the file.

But, no one will be able to guarantee that the mail you receive is absolutely "safe" and free of nefarious files. Not even Apple.

If you are this paranoid, please install a virus check program on your computer. There are several out there for MAC's from "free" to expensive.

For myself, I don't think I need one. But, I try to keep up with the latest observations and act accordingly.

The simple way to protect yourself is never open a file that has come from someone you don't know, or one that you did not ask for. And be careful where you point your browser! If you frequent trashy sites, then you're bound to get dirty at some point.

I guess the best protection is common sense.
