cmd + < is really Zoom In
cmd + > is really Zoom Out

I'm not sure of the English keyboard behaviour.
Maybe you must press the shift key.

To zoom, you must, as Yvan said, hold down the shift key. If you don't hold the shift key, you are actually trying a command , or .
