Device does not support iPhone

I have a RoadTrip in my car that worked with an old iPhone I used as an iPod touch. I now have an iPhone 3GS. I get a message about interference and another about charging. The interference has been non-existent thus far. I may yet get a newer RoadTrip that supports charging, but until then, am I doing any harm to my iPhone by using this device?

Thanks in advance

iPhone 3GS, iPhone OS 3.1.3
