Can you delete "suggested" email addresses?

For some reason, my iPad has memorized some email addresses I don't which to have populated in the drop-down suggested email addresses (i.e. in the address field in mail, when I start typing Smi... I get 3 Smiths even though only one is in my address book.

I've checked on my Mac (to which the iPad is synced) and the unwanted Smiths are no where to be found -- not in my Address Book. Also on my Mac in Mail I've clicked on Window>previous recipients and made sure the unwanted addresses aren't there either. (Also on my Mac these unwanted Smiths do not show up as suggestions the way they do on my 'pad).

On the iPad I can't determine any way to delete them. Any ideas?

As with the Mail.app on your Mac, the iPad's Mail application stores all message recipients in a previous recipients list. The auto-fill feature when addressing a message draws from the address book and from the list of previous recipients. Different from the Mail.app on your Mac, there is not a way to access the list of previous recipients with the iPad's Mail application to add a previous recipient to the address book if not already entered, or remove a previous recipient from the list - not at the present time anyway.

Although the list of previous recipients is included with the backup that is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process, the list of previous recipients is not synced with the list of previous recipients with the Mail.app on your Mac.

The same applies with the iPhone and the iPad Touch at the present time. Hopefully this will be included with firmware update 4.0.

Wow, that's an amazingly lousy feature for something that's supposed to be so user-friendly - surely some kind of work-around must be in the works??

My mom gets confused pretty easily when sending email and has sent emails to several similar, but wrong addresses. I've deleted all those emails from her "sent mail" folder, but they still appear when she goes to compose a new message. So is there really nothing that can be done to purge them from the suggestions list since that is apparently the only place they still exist?
