Photo orientation in Ipad

Hi I'm having problems with the photo orientation in Ipad. In my pictures, I have photos both in portraint and landscape mode. When I sync in Ipad, they are all landscape, the ones in portrait are orientated in landscape. How do I fix this. In my pc picture folder they are at the right orientation, but not in the ipad. Has anyone have this problem? and how do I fix it?

Which OS are you using?

I believe that old versions of Windows (XP and earlier) did not understand the orientation flag that is stored in the EXIF data. Most modern cameras have orientation sensors, and the save the orientation when the photo was taken in the EXIF data for the photo (the EXIF data is metadata that is stored along with the photo data in a jpg file).

Any decent photo browser will understand the EXIF data and will display the photo properly without having to manually rotate the photo. However, if you manually rotate the photo in Windows, the photo data will be rotated, but the orientation flag will not be changed. When the photo is loaded into the iPad, it interprets the marker in the EXIF metadata and rotates the photo a second time.

I'm not sure that this is your problem, but if it is your problem, then the photo is being displayed incorrectly on the PC, and the iPad is displaying it "correctly".

If you think this might be the problem, try installing a program called irfanview on your PC. You can download it at: http://www.irfanview.com

It is a great public domain image viewer program. If you install it, try looking at your photos in irfanview and see if it also rotates your photos like the iPad does.

p.s. I can understand how what is happening must be annoying. The photo will be displayed incorrectly, and as you instinctively rotate the iPad to fix it, it auto-rotates again leaving the photo always in the wrong orientation.

My OS is windows 7. So to fix it, I should rotate my pictures in my pc folder in landscape mode so that in the ipad it will be in portrait? As of right now in my pc folder my landscape pictures is in landscape in ipad but my portrait pictures is also in landscape in ipad. And no matter what I do, the portrait ones are always landscape. I've deleted the ipod photo cache and resynced. And no changed.

Hi ... before doing anything, you need to be sure that what I said is the real problem. I haven't used any Windows operating systems since XP. I did a quick google search, and I am astonished that Windows 7 apparently does not support auto-rotation.

In my mind ... this is a bug / serious limitation in the Windows photo viewer. Any modern photo viewer should do this.

To test for sure that this is an issue, take some photos with your camera in landscape and portrait orientations. Sync them with your iPad. If what I'm saying is correct, all of the photos should automatically be displayed properly on the iPad (i.e. if you shot the photo in landscape mode, it should display in landscape mode, if you shot in portrait mode, it should display in portrait mode).

If that is indeed the problem, I don't have a quick fix to suggest. Leaving the photos as they come from the camera will make them look correct on your iPad, but rotated on your PC.

I think you will need to do one of two things:

1) Find software that will rotate the images and reset the EXIF tag as well (I'm sure such software exists, although you would need to do a search to find it)
2) Find different viewing software for use on the PC. That would be my suggestion. Ignore the Windows viewer, and use something like Irfanview which I mentioned in my previous post. This way, you will no longer need to manually rotate the photos. This is what I used to do when I worked in Windows. Irfanview is very fast, full featured, and is great for viewing photos on the PC.

Note that any modern software like Photoshop, etc. in Windows will have the same issue. Windows will see the photos in one orientation, and Photoshop will see them different.

Actually I'm having the same problem, syncing from my iBook G4 to the iPad. I spent almost an hour rotating every photo correctly in Preview, synced them to the iPad, and they showed up incorrectly rotated, some even upside-down. These are all photos either taken on my iPhone 3GS or my Kodak digital camera, downloaded directly to the iBook. Does Preview not have proper rotational EXIF data? Do I need to go through and rotate them all in Photoshop now?

I'm also having the same problem with my iPad.

This problem also exists on the Apple TV. I've worked with the Genius Bar folks about the Apple TV issue, and they have escalated it to the engineers, but have yet to get back to me about a solution - several months now. I'm using 10.6.2 on a MacBook Pro 13", but this issues has been around for a couple of years on the Apple TV. Not sure why Apple has not dealt with it, since so many people have been frustrated by it.

The several photo programs I use on the Mac - including Adobe Lightroom - show the photos properly rotated, but both the Apple TV, and now the iPad, show them improperly rotated.

Challenging ...

I had the same problem with a load of old photos. I worked out that iTunes uses the thumbnail to import and if you changed the orientation in the final view then this is not reflected in the. What I did was to drag the finished photos to the desktop into a folder and re-import them into iPhoto, create an album and Sync it to my iPad . The orientation is then maintained.

Just got an iPad and experienced this problem but think I have found an accidental fix. I uploaded a set of images and a few came out the right way round. These were all ones that I had got from another person and renamed to fit into my set that I had taken. So I went back to the folder, copied everything into an 'images for iPad' folder that I set up, and them just did a bulk rename. Hey Presto - they all now view perfectly. I have no idea why though . . . :o)

Thanks for the information as this helped immensely. I was having the same problem having recently purchased the iPad and using Windows Vista. Made a series of edits in "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" to correct the view on my PC by rotating and then loaded into the iPad and they were showing incorrectly. Found a quick solution was to do all the rotations whilst in file manager (i.e. viewing the icons) and not picture editor. Seems this enables them to display correctly on the PC and also go into the iPad correctly. If you actually rotate the pictures whilst editing it doesn't work.

This works! Thanks a lot for your Occam's Razor solution and saving me from downloading needless software!

When viewing photos on iPad that I have downloaded from my fairly new digital camera... the iPad has an "orientation rotate" button and the photos can be rotated 90º with each push of the button. The new orientation saves in format as left which is perfect.
When I use photos that are downloaded from web or saved from email attachments or screen prints from iPad... the photo "orientation rotate" button is not available when viewing these photos.
I would like to be able to rotate any / all my photos that need rotating, not just the ones from my digital camera.

I don't have a "fix"... just trying to provide more info to the issue.

I have two cameras; a Pentax K-7 DSLR and a Canon A2000 point and shoot. All my Pentax images show up correctly in the iPad since they've been processed through the Pentax software. So on a hunch I "processed" the images shot with the Canon through the Pentax software and then they showed up in the iPad correctly. All I did was rotate them using Pentax's software vice windows software, save them with a different name, delete the old photos and resync. It may not help everyone since it's Pentax software but Adobe photoshop may be able to correct the same issue.
