After spending $999 for Final Cut studio, I figured the fancy "Compressor" utility would let me convert all my windows files in WMV to the apple formats. Or at least the HD video in AVCHD (.m2ts) from my camcorder?
I am not able to do these conversions in Compressor am I? What is the recommended approach to convert my source material on an ongoing basis?
Well after many hours of searching it looks like you need to buy Roxio Toast Titanium (about $99) which will convert AVCHD to other formats. Some on-line tutorials indicate it will encode to ProRes but I don't see that on the spec sheets. Not sure about WMV converters.
Final Cut Pro will only convert my Canon AVCHD if the camcorder is connected to the Mac and if "log and transfer" is used. This also works for a folder if I copy the contents of the camcorder and all the associated directories into a folder.
However I have a year of footage that is just plain .m2ts files that were previously loaded onto my pre-mac PC and just have the video (.m2ts) files without all the unnecessary subdirectories and so forth. These cannot be "log and transfered" For these I need Roxio Toast or some other conversion product.
