Apple wired keyboard not working after installation of "Magic Mouse"

I have an iMac running the latest version of Snow Leopard.
The keyboard had always worked normally when also using the normal wired mouse.
However, I was given a wireless "Magic Mouse" as a present recently and since installing it, the keyboard is "dead" after any restart and the only way to make it "live" again is to unplug the USB connector briefly then plug it in again. After that the keyboard, wired mouse and Magic Mouse all work normally again.
How can I get rid of this irritation?

Please be more specific about the "SMC & Repair Permissions" route. What is it and how do access it?

Also, you might wish to know that after each restart I now get a screen telling me that no wireless keyboard can be found, which is not surprising, because I don't have one and have never tried to install one.
