Converting .avi to .m4v

Guys,

I recently purchased the Apple TV. I love it, but its frustrating me what putting my movies onto it. The majority of my movies are in .avi format.

To make things a little easier I went Pro with Quicktime so I would convert files in to Apple TV ready. The problem I faced was I had bought Pro but it doesn't seem to want to co-operate. It wasn't playing .avi and was lucky a friend gave me a free version of DivX. Still! No sound?

I still cant make the .M4V files as they don't have any sound. Any suggestions?

I don't really see anything that should cause a problem for QT. It is however a little unusual to see an MP3 (MPEG 1) audio file sat with a MPEG 4 video file. The AVI standard is somewhat dated and lacks a number of features of more modern technology, for example it has problems with variable bit rate audio such as MP3 at low sample rates. Even M$ who created it abandoned it well over 10 years ago.

My suspicion is your problem might lie with the file rather than the conversion file.

You might however give mpegstreamclip a try, it's a free application from the internet
