Is PC2 6400 backwards compatible with PC2 5300 RAM?

Hello everybody,

I have a 2.2Ghz white MacBook, late 2007 model. It uses PC2 5300 RAM, and currently has 4 gigs. I have been thinking of maxing it out to 6GB, and was wondering if newer (and cheaper) PC2 6400 memory would work in it.

If you pair a PC2-6400 module with a PC2-5300 module, your computer should be fine.

However, not all MacBooks will take a matched pair of PC2-6400 modules.

So, you'll be best off just replacing one of your modules.

All indications from this and other forums say no. Most say that one 6400 chip may work along with the other being the 5300 but there would be no guarantee. I really recommend the correct RAM.
