macbook pro 2010 and dell u2711

For some reason my new MBP i7 is only allowing me 1920 x 1080 rather then the 2560 x 1400 the screen supports. The crazy thing is my VERY OLD 2007 2.33 did that resolution just fine.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I know that the GeForce GT 330M supports up to 2560x1600 for Maximum Digital Resolution.

On a configuration note: I am currently using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI connection cable, but have a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cables on order since the Dell has a DisplayPort on it.

Bingo! You need to run the Dell over DisplayPort directly from your new Mac. The Apple Mini DP to DVI Adapter does not support dual-link DVI, which is a requirement for 2560 x 1440 over DVI. Your old Mac had a dual-link DVI output.
