imovie no sound on imported avi files

Hi I am new to apple so help would be welcome.

The problem is I have some video avi files that I want to import into imovie. I don't have a problem importing the video it is just there is no sound with it. when I play the clips using quicktime the audio is fine but when I import it to imovie the sound disappears completely from all the clips.

Please help.
Thanks

I had that problem too. I have this first gen Vado HD. I made up a weird workaround that works but is a pain. First, I import into iPhoto. Then I drag the first clip down onto the Quicktime Pro icon in the toolbar and it opens in QT. Then I play that clip to the end so that the QT slider is all the way at the right. Then I go back to iPhoto, highlight the rest of the clips and drag and drop onto the open QT window. When those are all added in you slide both sliders in QT wide open, click file>save as>name it>desktop. Now you have a .mov file on the desktop. Open MPEG Streamclip, drag the .mov file onto it, click export>export to Quicktime. Select Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) and select high quality in the slider, rename file by adding 'AIC' to the end of the name, save to desktop. Now you have the same file in AIC on your desktop. Open iMovie and click file>import. If anyone has a better method for importing Vado AVI files, I would like to know about it, as long as it is free.
