see the following page:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/creatingvideo.html

By following the steps in this tutorial, QuickTime 7 Pro will automatically create an .m4v file containing H.264 video and AAC audio that is optimized for iPod. iPod can play the following video formats:
H.264 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio
MPEG-4 video
File formats: .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
Video: Up to 2.5 Mbps, 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile
Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 KHz, stereo audio

I've got a bunch of muxed MPEG-2 files... I believe that I have to demux them first but is it possible to use Compressor 2 to re-merge them into an mp4 video with audio?

I assume there may be a number of options here. Since I have the MPEG2 QT plug-in installed, I am not sure which options rely on this plug-in and which do not. Basically it is possible to strip the MPEG2 file to two separate tracks of audio and video information and then merge them in QT Pro, iMovie, FCX, FCP, and similar applications. The problem is the choice of intermediate audio file format and specific settings. Beginners frequently end up with an audio track which is not the same length as the video and you end up with an "out of sync" movie. It is usually much better to use a dedicated, MPEG based application which will handle this double-conversion process in one seamless action. Not sure if MPEG StreamClip (free) relies on my QT MPEG2 plug-in or not. But I have been using it lately to convert 1-2G MPEG2 public domain files downloaded from Archive.Com to iPod compatible files. (Just completed converting the entire "Radar Men from the Moon" serial.)

As far as I know, Compressor is simply a specialized QT Tools control head whose presets are designed primarily for use in the creation of "standardized" audio/video files destined to be burned to disc. Unlike QT Pro, it was not designed specifically for the addition/extraction of tracks, the cutting/pasting of sequential audio/video segments, sharpening/blurring of video, making changes to brightness/contrast/hue/saturation levels, etc.

I have tried for over a week to load a 20 minute clip in to my IPOD. I too purchased QuickTime Pro as instructed, but the conversion of the 20 minute clip runs for over 10 hours before it apparently crashes and doesn't complete!

Before I could even load it in to QuickTime Pro I had to take it through 2 other conversion.

Tech support now tells me that 10 to 12+ hours is not uncommon to convert a 15 minute clip to the IPOD format.

It appears that if you're wanting to play anything other than a APPLE purchased, pre-formated movie - you're out of luck.

I looked at other third party conversion software (to try to take it to IPOD acceptable format), but the only ones that I could find would only play on a MAC. Also, there's no guarantees that a 3rd party conversion would even work. Apparently not all MPEG-4 formats are alike, so even if you use another software package to get it to MPEG-4 - it still might not work.

Even if I COULD get the QUICKTIME PRO software to work, spending 12+ hours to convert a 30 minute clip is just not practical.

The obvious conclusion is that the IPOD is a great portable MUSIC player, but is not practical for playing VIDEOS.

Have you tried the QT Pro MPEG4/AAC option? Should be relatively easy to run a single pass test to see how it works. Let me know if you need instructions.
