triggering drums

Hi
I want to trigger a bass drum when pressing a pedal (Yamaha MFC10) and a hi-hat when releasing it, then a rim-shot when pressing another pedal & h-hat when releasing it. Does anyone have a tip for achieving this? Some EXS programming perhaps?

Powerbook, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Yamaha MFX10, Axon AX50, Godin Grand Concert SA

I am not familiar with that pedal. But it would need to send separate events (triggers) for when you press down and when you let up (switch open, switch close). That would be required to get the down and up beat timing correct for the bass drum and hi-hat.

Read the docs and see if can send two events, or read what the pedal is sending (using MainStage or Midi Monitor or something similar). If it does, then you would need to map one event/downbeat to one sound trigger (using a midi note value), and the other/upbeat to a different sound (different midi note value).

Hope that is clear enuf.....

Sounds like the footswitch will do the trick. Look at the MainStage 16-drum pad template as a good example. It allows you to map a midi note/drum pad trigger to a specific drum sound in the UltraBeat plug-in instrument. The method is the same when using the EXS24 sampler. If you load one of the canned drum kits into the EXS24, and go into the EXS24 Edit mode, you can see which midi note #s are assigned to which sounds. (Or you can use a keyboard and play up the scale to see which notes trigger what....)

You want to map the downbeat midi event (trigger) on your Yamaha pedal to the bass drum sound you want, and the upbeat midi event to your hi-hat sound.

The MainStage manual describes how to map midi events to achieve this. You might also need to read part of the Logic Instruments manual to learn how to work with the EXS24, if you are not already familiar with it.

You will need to use precise foot up-and-down action to get a tight rhythm. It will also be a great calf-building exercise.
