Should Macbook Pro sleep with lid open?

Mine new 15" won't. My wife's 6 mo. old 13" unibody won't either and I've noticed there are quite a few people on these boards who's machines won't sleep with the display open as well. We can get them to sleep no problem by closing the lid but otherwise only the screen sleeps with the display open. Resetting SMC and/or PRAM are often suggested (along with a few other things) but they haven't worked for anybody from what I've read here.

I'm pretty sure this is not right and was hoping someone with more expertise than I could inform me if this is an issue and, if so, is there a way to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Below is the console log when energy saver preferences are set to sleep at 1 minute and the display is open.

The CFServiceControllerBgin...... (etc) line repeats several times past what I've copied here and also every time I open an application. Hmmmmmm........ Is this as it should be?

Have you checked that you have the latest version of your HP printer drivers installed, WrongCoaster?

If you do a Google you'll find that HP printers and their drivers are often implicated in Mac sleep issues (though they are far from the sole cause) and I see HP mentioned in your log files.

If you have the HP launch agent installed in your "Log-in" items you might first try removing it and seeing whether the problem persists.

(There are many other possibilities with sleep issues, often involving out of date drivers or background software, so post back if this doesn't resolve it, but the info you have provided suggests the HP issue is worth checking out first)

Cheers

My new Macbook Pro 17in would not go to sleep and I traced the problem to problems in networking. The Console all messages was displaying a network config change message every 70 seconds or so. I did a search on the message on Google and it came back to Apple Discussions over in the getting online and networking section. Over there the guys who were having problems with disconnects on VPN discovered that by deleting the unused Ethernet connection(I am using Airport and a Verizon aircard only) the console mmessage would go away and VPN was fixed. I suspected this same problem was causing sleep problems also because of the frequent console messages and so proceeded to delete the Ethernet connection(it is very easy to add back in if you ever need it). Deleting the connection resulted in proper sleep mode performance. Oddly enough the notebook was sleeping properly on the first day I got it. The only thing I can figure that happened was that I installed the security update the next day and that update has somehow messed up networking. I would expect that this problem should be pretty easy for Apple to fix and hope it will be incorporated in 10.6.4. This problem only occurs on the latest Macbook Pro i5 and i7 models.
