I bought the Ipad shortly after it came out... when ever using, it I've noticed a subtle, yet sharp metallic or chemical odor. The actual odor is difficult to describe, but it causes very slight nausea and is irritating. I've found myself not using the iPad (despite the incredibly cool stuff it does) just because of this strange smell.

At first I thought it was the Apple flip case (maybe the 'new rubber smell'?)-then tested that by itself--nope not that. It's definately coming directly from the iPad.

Does anyone else noticet this? or am I just crazy? Maybe my iPad has got some sort of defect--maybe parts heating up inside are causing it?

I'm considering selling it on ebay to get rid of it---and perhaps try my luck with another one--I'm past the 14 day returns mark.

Self-Built (IBM motherboard, Dual-Core Pentium), Windows Vista

    "new car smell" LOL
But aren't you still under the 1 year Apple care?

I'd contact Apple support or bring it to an Apple store and talk to them about it.

Good call-thanks. I'm convinced now that my iPad is defective. Something's heating up inside that's causing the smell...i'm not crazy because I let a friend borrow it for a day, and he reported the same thing. Hopefully they can fix it, or replace it.

most likely a defective battery. you should definitely get it diagnosed and hopefully replaced.

A friend of mine had the same problem and it there indeed was a defect with his iPad. He brought it to the Apple store and they did replace it with another one! It had to do with a short regarding the battery which was causing it to burn up and give off that smell. Bring it back to Apple..

Thanks all... I brought it to the Genious Bar this weekend, and they replaced it with a new one without any fuss...so far, no problems with the new one...I was very happy that they replaced it so willingly!

My iPad and the Mac I bought 3 years ago all had the same awful smell. The plastics are sickening. I'm surprised more people don't notice this. My other computers don't have this problem. The iPad also makes me feel ill from vertigo, so so much for being an Apple person! What a shame, I love the device, it's incredible!!!!

I have been smelling this odor like a chemical solvent for a week now and I suspected it was my iPad.  I'm glad I'm not the only one. I will take it to the apple store this week.
