iPhone restore error 1002

My phone is telling me that I need to restore it.
I did all the DFU/force restore stuff.
I used multiple computers.
Itunes will give me error message 1002 just before the phone completely restores. Phone is not jail-broken or anything like that.

I've tried to restore my phone at least 10 times to no avail.

What does error 1002 even mean? I'm desperate! Please help!

You can check this article for error codes. http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275

Go to the link that says Specific error codes and resolutions. It mentions the 1002, and says that 1000 codes have to do with problems in the download of a file.

Do you have virus software, if so, turn it off. See if there are any further answers on that page for you.

The same happened to me. I was texting a friend with it connected on the computer. Suddenly i got no signal. I turned airplane mode on and off, nothing. Restarted it then I got these messages in many different languages, like when the iPhone is new saying it only does emergency calls. ThenI tried to restore and got stuck in this eternal loop, getting the same error.

Tried to restore even on a PC and not working...
Not jailbroken here

I am also seeing this error. My iPhone 3Gs decided it would no longer work and required a restore in the middle of my work day-- not connected to any computer or plug at the time. The only thing it may have registered was a wifi network in the building but I have "declined" using it in the past, so I can't see how it would have connected...

I've tried all but using another computer in the troubleshooting steps in the update and restore alert message link... I do not have another computer to try and restore my phone.

Is there anyone out there who is having the same problems right now? Any idea what is going on??!

I too have had had this problem, it started yesterday AM, after being connected to a car charger for 2 hours. It just rebooted itself. Then it was OK.

4 hours later it was back in the car, charging - I was using Waze on my home.

Made a call, was OK.

10 minutes later lost all network connectivity, then it just told me it needed restoring, and could only make emergency calls.

I spent half of last night trying to restore, using different cables, different ports, all the help on the Apple site didn't work.

So today I'm off to Apple store in Cambridge UK, hope they can just swap it out for me.

Very similar situation. I my 3gs in the car for 30min. It said that it overheated, but temps where not that hot??? It went in to emergency call only. I tried to restore several times. Called technical service and since it is a bit over a year old I could only get "tips" unless I wanted to pay for advise.
So I tried restore on my mac, on my pc. I have uninstalled/reinstalled itunes. I've turned off virus protection/firewalls. I've done every recommendation and it still spits out error 1002. I'm thinking it is toasted!!!!

If there are any success stories I would love to hear about it!

BTW I updated to iOS 4 only a few days before???

My wife's iPhone 3GS just did the same. It is 14 months old. Tried everything so far. Spoke to "senior" tech guy in Cork who basically said: tough, it is out of warranty and so we wash our hands of you. Apparently this is only a minor problem to apple. £450 pound phone lats 14 months and apple does not care. My son's £10 phone from Tesco is 2 years old, has been kicked, wet, chewed by dog, dropped and still works. Go figure. After 25 years using Apple as they are reliable, it may be time for a change. I note no-one from Apple comes here... HELLO, anyone out there?
