Changing existing albums to smart albums

I have created a number of reference albums with many, many photos. Is there a way to change a reference album to a smart album - that way when I add new pictures to my pictures folders they are automatically updated in iPhoto (use iPhoto V9.0). Or do I have to start all over again and delete/create new albums?

Manual conversion is not that difficult, if I understand correctly. I would:

Select all pix in the existing album. Tag them all with the same keyword.

Create a smart album based on that keyword.

Delete the old album.

After that, apply the keyword to get new pix into the album.

Repeat for however many albums you want to convert.
