Sound only works when headphones are plugged in!

Today my iPod decided to only play sounds when the headphones are plugged in. At first, the sound wasn't working period. Then I rebooted the iPod, and the sound only worked when the headphones were plugged in. When I adjust the volume with, or without, headphones plugged in, it displays 'volume (headphones)'. What gives? How do I get my external speakers to work once again? If this issue has already been addressed, please direct me to that thread, but I was not able to find a solution with the search terms I used. Thanks.

When I got home this evening, I plugged it into iTunes, and it automatically resynced as usual. I then tried the volume control again and it no longer had '(headphones)' below the word 'volume'. So I tried to play some sound without the headphones and it worked just fine. I don't know what the issue was, but it's working fine now. It had nothing to do with restarting the device, or resetting all settings because I tried both prior to starting this thread.
