How do I rename a printer in OS X (10.3, 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6, I really don't care). I specifically do not mean, "how do I rename the print queue on my system." I want to change the name the printer reports when polled on the network. Printers generally start with something generic, such as "HP8000," and I want to change that to "Under Stairs."
Back in the still missed OS 9 days, I used an Apple utility called "Apple Printer Utility." It polled the printer and reported the name. One could edit the name and then save it back to the printer. I can't find anything similar to use with any flavor of OS X.
MacBook Pro,
Mac OS X (10.5.8),
I also use a G4 Cube and MacMini running 10.4
In OS X 10.6 you would go to system preferences>print and fax. Then you would click on the little + sign, highlight your printer, and change the name in the box. I have not used OS X 10.5 (your profile configuration) for quite awhile, so I do not know if that has changed.
On my hp IP printer, you type the IP Address of the Printer into your web browser, and the printer responds with html configuration screens, one of which allows you to change the "hostname".
