Videos won't play in iTunes 9.1.1

Just updated to 9.1.1 on both 2.53GHz MBP and Core i7 iMac. Movies and video play fine on the iMac, but only audio from movie files will play on the MBP. Tried restarting, repairing permissions, deleting iTunes app and re-installing from a fresh download. Video still won't play. Very frustrating.

Searched for "No video" on this forum and only saw a February discussion about how remote speakers may cause a similar problem. I am not using remote speakers.

Suggestions?

I am having a similar problem with videos. After an update, some of my video files play and others do not. They are all in mpeg-4 video format so I don't know that is the difference except the videos that are not playing are larger files of movies. The shorter videos play fine. Any ideas? My quicktime is up to date and I'm using iTunes 9.1. Before updates I was able to view the videos without a problem.

Hello all,

I have so far been unable to reproduce this, so I need some more information.

First, let's see if this happens in a new iTunes Library:
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Open iTunes while holding the Option key on the keyboard.
3. Click Create Library...
4. Choose a location for this test library.
iTunes will open with an empty library.
5. Drag a video file that exhibits this behavior into iTunes.
6. Try to reproduce the behavior.
Does it still happen in this new library?

Next, let's see if it happens when iTunes is opened in Safe Mode:
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Open iTunes while holding the Option key on the keyboard.
3. Click Choose Library...
4. Point it to your original iTunes Library (by default this is in /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes).
iTunes will open with your usual library.
5. Quit iTunes.
6. 2. Open iTunes while holding the Option and Command keys on the keyboard.
iTunes will open in Safe Mode.
7. Try to reproduce the behavior.
Does it still happen in Safe Mode?

Now, this is weird...

I found that the problem was with the "pop-up" window, that shows the album covers, or the movies "on a separate window" (maybe they are the same object). iTunes seems to flash, and didn't open the window.

I started clicking an album cover to see what happened, then accidentally minimized the iTunes window (Command+M). When I restored it, magically the pop-up windows started appearing again!

All of you that have the same problem, can you try minimizing and restoring the iTunes windows and see what happens?

Weird, isn't it?

That minimizing trick didn't work for me, Roberto. I'm also going to respond to Roy's offer to assist, although the video file doesn't seem to matter (regardless of whether I purchased it, encoded using HandBrake or made it in iMovie) No video plays on the MBP, but will work on the i7 iMac.

The Video Size menu under View is grayed-out, and only audio plays unless I go to full screen.

Joey, you're right. The video doesn't matter.
It happened to me with the three kinds of video you listed.

As I said before, I think it has something to with the pop-up windows that doesn't appear.
What happens if you click (or double-click) an album cover in the lower left part of the iTunes window? does it appear in a different window?

That was the first window I saw after restoring the minimized iTunes window. Then, all the pop-up started appearing.

I think I understand what you're saying. I can click on the album cover and it pops open in a new window. But even after minimizing iTunes and restoring the window, I can't get videos to pop-up in a separate window.

Did this permanently fix your issue?

I should mention that there does seem to be some effort for a video window to pop-up. The main iTunes window falls to the background, but no video window appears. Still very frustrating.

Hey, it's working now! Your solution worked for me eventually.

I had tried opening an album cover in a pop-up window and then using the arrow keys to advance to a video file. It wouldn't work.

Then I just restarted the MBP in frustration and tried that trick again. This time, it worked! Now, even when I quit iTunes and open a video file, the window will pop-up.

I still consider this a bug. The video window should pop-up automatically, like it used to do. I hope Apple will address this.

Thanks for the help, Roberto. Good luck exploring the issue further RoyB.

There are several you can download at:

These are also posted under iTunes at:

I just upgraded my 10.5 iSight G5 iMac to iTunes 9.1.1 and the following behaviors occured:
1) The video would not stream properly: you can hear the audio, but the video does not show up (just a greayed out video box).
2) On a version of the video in my iTunes "Movies" tab, the chapter markers are 'one off'; they jump to the position of the next marker. This does not happen if I open the local movie in Quicktime Player (7.6.6).

These videos were composed in iMovie HD 6.0.4 (I know, I need iMovie '09). Exported for iPod. (I don't think this has much to do with it, myself since iTunes 9.1 had no problems with this type of file).

Count me among those having the exact same issue. Movies and videos (any type: music, iTunes purchased, personal, etc.) no longer played in the "Separate Window." The sound would play, but the video window would not open. Videos would play full screen and within iTunes, but not, as is preferable, in a separate window.

Following Roberto's tip, I opened an album cover and minimized it. I then switched to a video (the superb "Fantastic Mr. Fox" for the sake of clarity 😉 ), and voila, my video window was back. It's a very strange problem, no doubt caused by the most recent iTunes update, but one that has a simple fix.

Hi, Roy,

I make a screen recording to show you the iTune 9.1.1 issue,
The video just blank when I try to use podcast to playback the video podcast, you can hear the sound, but no video.

I can play back the same file that has been downloaded from the same server.
In addition, the same podcast you can play back via iphone without any problem.

Please help ...

Thanks
