Just got the Camera Connector Kit yesterday and i was so excited because i have a music video shoot that i wanted to be able to film and then upload to the iPad for review. I'm working with a Canon T1i DSLR.
Unfortunately when i shot (720 .h264 30 fps video), and uploaded it via the camera connector kit, the files were not able to play back. All i see is this little grey ".mov" icon. All my photos came in fine, but its unfortunate that the video files won't play back because that's why i really wanted it. Apple support has no idea what the problem is!
The iPad only supports AAC audio. While turning audio off on your DSLR might work, the only way you will be able to get sound on it with the video is if you convert the video file with the same video format but change the audio to AAC.
But the OP's video was 30fps. It seems to be the sound codec is unsupported. Has anyone tried a video without sound recording on? I will experiment on the 28th myself but any more info would be helpful!!
I have the same problem with HD mov files from my Canon SD3500. I don't think it's an audio codec issue. When I take video in VGA res with the same camera, it imports, plays, and sounds fine.
I have a GoPro HD (minimum res. wvga @ 60fps) as well that i would like to import on to my new ipad. Its strange that i can see it prior to import as an image of the video but when i import it turns into an mp4 icon!
Is apple just trying to tease us?
This device would be the best if i could import direct instead of having to bring my laptop along as well with itunes, kind of defeats the object of having an ipad doesn't it?
Come on Apple sort us an update out so we can import video?
I just got the camera kit and bought a canon ICUs 130 cause of it's compact size and 720p 30fps video mode.. If the iPad won't play the video because the audio codec isn't supported then that's very dissapointing. I think apple aren't likely to budge let's hope canon can do a firmware update for it's cameras, cause the two lower res modes transfer on the iPad and pay fine... But i want the 720p vids.... What's the point of having a 720p video play back device a camera conector kit and a camera that shoots 720p if im going to be forced back into a 640x480 workflow that's so 90's please apple or canon do an update so it's compatible.
Ok just to clarify the Canon IXUS 130 records video in 3 sizes and it's tech specs are below;
Movies
MOV (Image Data: H.264; Audio Data: Linear PCM monaural)
Movie Frame Rate
HD 1280x720: 30fps (21min 23ec), 640x480: 30fps (46min 46sec), 320x240: 30fps (2hr 23min 41sec)
Now the iPad specs for playback are below;
Audio PlayBack
Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
Audio formats supported: HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
User-configurable maximum volume limit
Video Playback
Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
So it seems the iPad will play h.264 video at 720p resolution at 30fps in a .mov header but PCM will only work if it is contain in an .avi header
In terms of video playback capability the device is more then capable of playing the video.... Now what docent make sense is that the two lower resolution videos from the canon play fine with audio, which makes me think it's not an audio codec issue.
I think time will sort this out both apple and canon need to work out why it's not functioning properly.. Does anyone have thoughts on this?
I can understand the iPad not playing the imported movies, but can you take the imported movie files and sync them with your computer to get the full video with audio? I'm looking to get the camera kit for use with a t1i as a way to offload pictures and videos while on vacation without having to lug a laptop around. I don't mind not being able to see the videos on the iPad while on vacation, but my concern is being able to offload them to my laptop at a later time with full resolution and sound for archiving.
Thanks
