iTunes doesn't "see" iPad

I have a new Macbook Pro 2.66 / 8 GB, 15" and an iPad and an iPhone. The problem is that every now and then - about once a day or so, iTunes doesn't see the iPad or iPhone when they are plugged in. The device starts charging but there is no indication that a sync is occuring.

Following the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747 I reinstall iTunes and replace the AppleMobileDevice kexts and then things are fine, but after another day or so the problem occurs again. I have not been able to determine what might be causing that. Any idea?

Macbook Pro 2.66 i7, 8 GB, 15", Mac OS X (10.6.3), iMovie 09, Aperture 3, Fuji Finepix HS10, iPad 64 Wifi, iPhone 3GS 32

I am using iTunes version 10.3.1 and have never experienced this issue. Not sure what version others are using.

Just a guess, in iTunes, with ios device recognized by iTunes under "Devices", ios highlighted, click on "Info" tab in top menu bar of iTunes. Scroll down to "Advanced", does it help to have all those options "unchecked"?

I hate seeing so many people suffering with this. iTunes 10.3.1 may be an answer?! Not sure at all.

I just went to charge my ipad 2 (verizon 64gb) and connected it to my computer (macbook pro 10.6.8 2.66 i7) and it doesn't recognize it and either does itunes. i put itunes in the trash and looked for the system/library/extentions which "applemobiledevice.kext" should be but its not there. i went ahead and deleted itunes restarted and reinstalled and when i hooked up ipad 2 still did not show up on mac desk top however, when i started itunes ipad 2 now shows up there. it is a little glitchy as it first showed up and then disappeared but i unplugged it and the plugged it back in and now it is there and charging. how will i get it to show up on my mac desktop or should i just not worry about it. also when i connect my ipad to the mac it used to make a little noise but now nothing. it is very odd.

All you have to do is restart your computer with your iPad connected to your computer. After a while your iPad should pop up that iTunes symbol. After that you go to iTunes on your computer (iTunes should recognize your iPad now) and press restore. It takes a couple of minutes but after it's done restoring your iPad should work. It worked for me.

I've been having this problem with my ipad and PC running Windows Vista. itunes has no problems recognising my ipods and ipod nanos. But itouch, ipad and ipad 2 all suffer from this problem.

I've not got a fool proof solution, but I find if I try the following things that eventually works:

- turn off Windows Defender and other security software

- stop and then restart Apple Mobile Device under "Services"

- "Repair" Apple Mobile Device USB Driver under "Control Panel", "Hardware and Sound" and "Universal Serial Bus Controller"

- Take screenshot using ipad - hold power and option button together

- Restart ipad - hold power button until screen appears to swipe for power off

Ok. I was having this problem with my iphone...and now with the new IOS 5, it's even more rediculous why my iTunes couldn't recognize my iPhone to sync with via wifi. It would recognize my iPad 2, but not my iPhone. SOLUTION: USE FIND MY IPHONE and locate all your devices, including your mac/pc. BAM! iTunes can find your phone via wifi now. Don't know why this works, but it does. Otherwise, it just said "Looking for iPhone...." and gave up and glitched out.

Ever since the new update to OS 5, my iPad Won't sync with Itunes. It is getting so painful. I have uninstalled iTunes over and over. I have uninstall everything, and reinstall everything every time I want to sync anything on my iPad. Is Apple this inept at designing things that actually work? I am so angry and dismayed at this point, that I don't think I will every buy another Apple product as long as I live. Why can't you make these things work APPLE!!!! Wireless will magically start working, and then stop.

Synced my ipod (iOS 5.0.1) to my girlfriend's PC, as Apple's leaving behind it's G5 users now and the G5's OS doesn't play well with the latest iPod Touch.

She's annoyed at the confusion resulting from having two user's syncing iDevices on the same computer so I figured- OK, I'll try re-pairing my iPod with my old G5.

Trouble is, since the iPod runs iOS5.0.1 and iTunes on the G5 only goes up to 9.1.1, the pod won't show in iTunes.

Nice one Apple, every heard of the term "Backwards Compatible"?

The new frontier stuff is making iDevices far less user friendly and the complexity of version control and compatibility threatens to turn much of your new functionality in to liabilities, effectively bricking your customer's devices. Please. Just make it simple, reliable and user-friendly.

Guys, have you tried the following thing:

From Windows, open Services (press Windows key, type "Services", press enter) and search for a service called "Bonjour". Then right click it and select restart. Wait for it to restart, then reconnect your device. This always solves the problem of iTunes not recognising it (for me at least).
