Currently running iPhone 3G w/OS 3.1.3. I recently updated about three weeks ago. Yesterday my email app recently starting crashing for no reason. I will open the app, select an account, and then when looking for which email to read the app will just close and the phone will return to the home screen. Sometimes I get as far as responding to an email, but the result is the same, it will just close and return to the home screen.
I have an Exchange 2003 Account, Verizon, Gmail and a .mil account. Never had any issues prior to yesterday.
Have you followed the standard steps in the manual?
You try these in order until one works.
1. Turn off and on the phone.
2. Reboot the phone (not same as turn off and on...they are different).
To reboot you hold BOTH the HOME and LOCK buttons.
DO NOT let go when it says slide to turn off.
KEEP holding when it goes blank.
LET GO when you see the Apple Logo.
3. Restore the phone via iTunes restoring from a backup.
4. Restore the phone via iTunes NOT from a backup.
5. Call Apple and make apppointment at store or arrange to ship it back for testing and possible exchange if still covered.
Exact same issue here. I did the restore from iTunes, and this issue still is on the iPod. I have a 32GB 3G with 3.1.3 on it. I average about 2 seconds before the app kicks me back into the Home screen. This started sometime in the afternoon on 5/28.
Have we located any solutions? Could this have been a bug that just hit some random iPods that Apple may fix with the next update? I really do not feel like paying $30 to talk to someone from Apple on the phone about this. That is not true product support. That is borderline extortion.
Hi
I have the exact same issue! iPhone 3G 16GB. It started about 1 week ago, tried everything and nothing works. I have 2 email accounts set up, 1 from my work is fine, the one from home crashes after 2-3 seconds.
I am experiencing this issue with exchange. It seems to be in some kind of loop, trying to download messages. If I delete the email it works ok, until i get a new one, and then my phone just beeps for 5 seconds forever, but I never have a new message. I've deleted the account, re-added it. I've not gone as far as restoring the phone because I don't want to lose my settings. What the heck is going on here?!
Update:
I've restored using a backup and I'm still experiencing the problem. I can restore without a backup, but that is a real pain, I'm going to lose all my text messages. This is going to work, but I have no assurance that this isn't going to happen again. The whole "restore to factory settings" seems a bit like a Ctrl-Alt-Del. I could even understand if this was a third party app that was having problems.
I'm willing to accept limited configuration options for a reliable platform, but this will be my second "from scratch" iphone restore in the past month . . . .
Restoring without backup doesn't resolve the issue either.
Basically I restored, and immediatley went to configure exchange and very quickly started to experience the issue.
Restoring from a backup now, and I'll be troubleshooting exchange next. I'm going to see if there is somewhere to reset the "activesync" on the IT server.
I've also noticed that it happens around a few certain emails. I'm going to attempt to delete the emails around that and see if that helps.
I got a fix.
For whatever reason, during the setup of the phone they had me use an "@" sign for my email address. They told me change the "@" sign to my full email address and that seemed to resolve the issue.
I'm not sure if that was helpful or not. I can post more details if required. Hope it helps!
on 5th of june i had the sane problem on One of my three account. Everything is working except the inbox of one account. I called the Italian support number but he was not able to help me without giving any explanation. He told me "I am sorry" and he opened a file gave to a departement who will call me back.
If any one solved the problem please let me know. Thank you

Here the solution after talking with Apple assistance by phone.
Reinstall the main software for iPhone. And it is working perfectly. Follow iTunes instruction or iPhone manual how to reinstall the main software.
I've seen very similar symptoms, it also started for me about two or three days ago, first with the account that uses an exchange server with notifylink. I open mail, it attempts to connect, I get a flash view of the mail then the mail disappears and it drops back to the home screen. I've noticed that it does show me with a badge the increments of unread mail (1,2,8,14), it just can't seem to hold on in the mail app. To correct it I tried the usual power cycle, reboot, delete and re-add mail accounts to no avail. Following your advice, Umberto, I tried a restore and restore from backup. Oops, that didn't work either. In fact, it seems to have gobbled up all of my apps (and probably music) that I'd downloaded. This may be a different problem I'd previously solved by re-installing iTunes. I'll try that next. Why would this happen to multiple people all at once. Was there a patch or something pushed out to users of 3.1.3? Does everyone else experiencing this problem also have a 3GS? So far I think we all have exchange servers. Do others use Notifylink, too?
I am not sure if this is fixed, but my mail app is currently no longer kicking me back into the main screen consistently. It still does at random times, but that is when the app has been left alone for a while, and then it takes just a few seconds longer to throw me out. I just checked it again today, and it seemed to be working fine, but I am still not sure if I trust the app completely still. Anybody else able to get in?
As for the suggestion with consulting a mac genius, I live in the middle of nowhere, North Dakota. As far as I know, the nearest Apple Store is in Minneapolis.(Technically the one in Manitoba is closer, but who's counting?) I will be visiting the Nashville area pretty soon here, so I will be asking these questions to them if I can.
I will update this if I get some answers. I hope I do. Please let me know if you guys found anything.
I have the same exact problem with with 3G. It started happening a few times over the past 2 days and now my mail crashes everytime I open it! I am screwed for work. I need this to work. I did the reset and I restored my phone through iTunes figuring that would fix this. So now I've lost all my apps and music and my mail STILL does NOT work. What is going on????
Namely, delete any bounced messages in your inbox. I'm using a 2nd gen ipod touch, software is 3.1.3 (7E18). I tried doing the restore from backup and that made no difference. Instead what worked was:
- access my mail through my desktop browser (gmail) and delete the bounced messages in my inbox
- launch the mail app from my ipod touch. now that the bounced messages aren't there, the app doesn't crash.
This is a decent workaround but obviously bounced messages shouldn't crash the mail app. I trust there'll be a fix for this in a future release.
