Q: Could not load Network preference pane

Out of the blue, my network preference pane now fails to load.

The first sign was that Airport card monitor in the status bar showed no reception and, worse, says "Airport card not installed". If I then try to load the Network pref pane from System Preferences, I'm met with a message box telling me it can't be loaded.

The .prefpane file is present in /System/Library/PreferencePanes (and, for what it's worth, plutil /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/Contents/Info.plist returns OK).

I've repaired disk permissions (both as normal and from the install disc).

I can still connect to the network, though, so it's not the end of the world.

What's next to check?

MacBookPro 15", Mac OS X (10.6.3)

A little more information, in the console log it is telling me:

    30/04/2010 04:30:11 System Preferences[417] Error loading /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Network: dlopen(/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Network, 265): Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EAP8021X.framework/Versions/A/EAP8021X
    Referenced from: /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Network
    Reason: image not found

And it is right - there is a directory there, but it is empty:

    chmbp:PrivateFrameworks cah$ cd EAP8021X.framework/
    chmbp:EAP8021X.framework cah$ pwd
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EAP8021X.framework
    chmbp:EAP8021X.framework cah$ ls -al
    total 0
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 68 16 Dec 19:58 .
    drwxr-xr-x 145 root wheel 4930 16 Dec 20:58 ..

    Any advice?

I suggest that you download & install the Mac OS X v10.6.3 v1.1 Update (Combo).

    That's done the trick.

    Much obliged - thanks.
