Images not appearing - getting that tiny blue box with question mark ? ...

I've searched this issue on the boards but haven't found an answer.

I have an Intel Duo Core 2 iMac running 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.5. I often find that when I open web pages, graphics and images are missing and in their place is a small blue box with a question mark in it. I often see this in craigslist postings.

In other threads, I've read people theorize about all different kinds of possible causes for this (from DNS problems to poor code), but haven't found an answer that will fix the problem.

Today I opened an email from Apple asking me to rate a recent workshop. I opened the email in my Yahoo mail in Safari. In the email, there was a small blue box with the question mark instead of an image.

_Here's what's interesting and different than what I've read in other posts:_

When I open the same email or webpage in Firefox, the pictures and graphics always appear. And, much more interestingly, once I open the pages in Firefox, if I go back and open them again in Safari, the images and graphics appear in Safari. This is always true.

What is causing this? It's really frigging annoying, and I see posts about it stretching years back. There must be some way to fix this!

Thanks for any info/advice.

HI,

From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Appearance tab. Tick the box next to: Display images when the page opens.

If that box is already ticked, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still have problems loading images, go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*

Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.

If you still have problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

So, this is weird. Every time I flush the DNS cache it solves the problem, but only for a brief moment.

If I click on a page with an image that doesn't appear (but has the question mark in the blue box), and then flush the DNS cache, then the image will appear when I click on the page again (or hit refresh). But, if I keep looking at posts, I will still get the question mark on other pages. And I can solve it by flushing the DNS cache, but, once again, only for a single refresh.

I appreciate your attempts to help, and anyone else's for that matter. But I just don't understand how this can be a known issue that so many people have had problems with for so long and it still not be resolved by Apple.
