My husband had the same problem. He updated the firmware and held the power button of the keyboard until it showed up on the iPad.(3G-64gig). Works now. The keyboard is an A1314 with aluminum keys.

What do you mean he updated the firmware? I just got mine delivered from China. I would hope I wouldn't need to update anything at this point but just in case... how do you update the firmware?

I was stymied, but here goes.
1. Turn on the iPad's Bluetooth setting from the Settings menu.
2. Turn on your keyboard. If you've given it a name, it should show up and say "Not Paired."
3. Here's the step I could not figure out: Select your keyboard by tapping on the iPad's screen where the name appears.
4. It will then give you the code prompt to type in some numbers and pair the two.

Good luck.

Thanks much. I had beaten my head against a wall on this. First, I had no luck until turning my iMac off. I believe that the keyboard was still listening to the iMac's Bluetoth, despite my having disconnected it using the iMac's Bluetooth menu. I say that because, after disconnecting and trying unsuccessfully to link to the iPad, I went back to the room with the iMac. The Bluetooth menu treated the keyboard as connected again. I suspect that there is some setting to reconnect automatically. Anyway, I disconnected the keyboard again and then turned off the iMac. Now I got to step 2 in your experience below, but would not have gotten beyond it without your tip in step 3. Thanks.

Bad news for white BT keyboard users and iOS 4.2.1 on an iPad. It still doesn't work. 😟 The discovery phase hangs and if I hit return on my white BT keyboard, I see two rapid succession alerts, the first with a code to enter. But by that time it's too late. I'm disappointed Apple can't support all of their BT gear on an iPad. The second message is "Pairing Unsuccessful Make sure 'white bt keyboard' is ready to pair, the PIN code is correct, and try again."
