Kindle App - not connected to Wifi or 3g?

Only the books you choose are stored on the iPad. If you already own Kindle books before you install the Kindle app, the first time you open it there will not be any books downloaded. You have to click on "Archived Items" at the bottom of the screen where is says "Showing" and choose the books you want to download. I've had a Kindle 2 for a year and I still plan to use it for reading books because eInk is far superior for long form reading but it is nice having the Kindle app on the iPad for reference purposes. So glad Amazon had their app ready for the iPad launch.

Once the book is on your iPad, you can definitely read it without wifi or 3g (like on a plane).

Also, I don't know about removing books - haven't tried that yet -- BUT unless you find them in your way, books are soooooo small that they don't really take up enough space to warrant deleting them - for example, you can fit about 1000 books in 1 gigabyte. Even if the math is off because you have some big books, you're still not gonna run out of space due to books -- more likely it will be from videos, music, photos.

To me, backlit displays are less than ideal for long reading sessions. But obviously everyone is different. However, there is no question that eInk is a clearer display for text. Of course, the iPad's screen is gorgeous for everything else. Less intense magazine/article reading with pictures is a pleasure on the iPad.

My wife bought me an iPad and I moved all of my Kindle books on it. I have not had a problem with long term reading on the iPad. I fly the pacific quite frequently and usually go through 1 book each way.

What I do like is that the readability does not change in ambient light conditions. I used to have those little reading lamps, etc. for the Kindle so I could read at night.

The iPad is lighter, slimmer and much more classy than the Kindle DX.

I'll buy a 3G iPad as soon as I can find one locally. And I have a Kindle2. I plan to use both for reading. Kindle pluses include outdoor readability, small size and long battery life. iPad has color, needs no auxiliary lighting when indoors, is likely better for reading PDFs (and anything with color in it!) etc. Of course, the iPad also does much more than the Kindle.

I've had no trouble reading books on my iPhone using the Kindle app, but do so only for relatively short periods.

Yes. On my iPhone at least the book is downloaded into the iPhone. I assume same is true on iPad.
