Ipod touch screen will not respond

When I try to "slide to unlock" my ipod it does not respond. I cannot access my ipod at all as it will not open. I have restored the factory settings and also updated software and it still will not work.
It has been working perfectly for around 18 months and has just stopped working this weekend. Has any other user experienced this issue?
