Non-US (international) iPad 3G Activation

Hi,

I've ordered (purchased through a friend in US) an iPad 3G to be used in India. I understand that iPad is an UNLOCKED device and will support any Micro-SIM but the 'Cellular Data Activation' wizard seems to activate only ATT card, so its still petty much locked regionally.

I've spent hours googling but found nothing on this except a TUAW article that says "3rd-Party International SIM cards were confirmed to work by our readers. One chat participant experimented with an O2 Germany SIM and reported success." So there's some hope, but it would be great if someone can confirm this.

Is there *anyone here using an iPad 3G with a non-US and non-ATT card successfully*? Please let us know.

It won't be easy to find anything on Google regarding international iPad 3G activation, as it was delivered on April 30th in the US. Shipping it internationally will take at least until May 3rd or 4th until they're delivered abroad through friends&family (I'm waiting for one myself).

If I understand this correctly, the cellular data activation wizard won't show up if you pop a non-AT&T Micro-SIM in the iPad. You will need to enter your GPRS access point information manually, and it will work.

I understand and I'd like to believe you but a confirmation from someone would be nice. The AT&T popup bothers me, even if someone could atleast confirm that a non-ATT SIM doesn't show that popup, it'll help clear my doubts.

I don't want to end up spending $800+ on a device that doesn't work in my area, I'll get a Wifi instead if even EDGE won't work here. 3G is months away anyway in India.

Thanks

I can confirm that GPRS, EDGE and 3G all work on Swisscom's network here in Switzerland. I had to cut out the SIM to Micro-SIM - just 1 day before Swisscom announced that they have Micro-SIMs in the stores now.

Oh and by the way, the AT&T wizard disappears as soon as you pop in a non-AT&T SIM.
