iPad lost WiFi signal everytime i wakes up

HI all,
I just got my iPad Wifi for 2 days, everything works like in heaven except the WiFi problem...
And I am not sure if this is related to the weak signal problem that everyone is having in another thread, the problem that I am having is more related to losing a presistent WiFi connection everytime iPad wakes up from the sleep.

It does not happen with my iPod/iPhone at all. But it is frustrating and idiotic to have to go into setting and press the wifi AP name before I can use the iPad.

Any advice?

Yeah man what is the deal, how is this not on the news? These iPads have serious problem. I am going to try to take mine back, though it has been over two weeks. I've tried most of the things listed here, and they have not worked. Apple doesn't even acknowledge the problem or say whether they will address it?

Maybe your iPad has a problem (or not since you give no details on what you have encountered or what you have tried), however, how do you conclude that all iPads must have serious problems? I've had my iPad for almost a month and I haven't had any WiFi problems or any other problems.

Out of curiosity, why would you keep your iPad for more than two weeks if the WiFi did not work? If there was something wrong with it you should have either exchanged it or at least talked to Apple support for advice.

When a thread has over 100,000 views I would say that there is a problem. And that is not even the issue I am having! Over the past couple of weeks, I have logged in and seen many MANY threads about the the WiFi and not connecting, some with view counts approaching that same number.

Apple has a STICKY at the top of this group about this issue -- unfortunately their suggestions do not work, for me and many others.

I didn't take it back before because this is the first time in many years that an Apple product seems to have a serious flaw. I figured they would put out a software patch to 'fix' it. I had faith in them, in other words. Since they haven't put out a patch or even said one is coming, I now think maybe it is a hardware thing, and if that is the case then I would think it would be in the news.

But I am glad yours is working for you.

I have the same problem, at least if you're referring to "sleep" as how I think you are. If I press the button to unlock it after I haven't been using it for a while, the WiFi signal ALWAYS drops. And if I hit the power button again to lock it again and then unlock quickly, the signal comes back and it works fine. I have no idea why it would do that that but it's pretty much constant. I think that's pretty much the base of my issue w/ the device right now, and I'm really hoping this is something that can be fixed via a software update.

I think the strangest part of this problem is, when it wakes up and I naturally tried to start some app which requires internet connection, it does not even try to start WiFi connection with whatever Wifi network that it has worked with, I had to go all the way into settings-> Wifi and tap on one of my SSID to make things work....I have to say this is so "un-apple"....

Even my dumpest notebook with WinXP does not need me to do that when it wakes up from sleep.

The number of times a thread has been viewed has nothing to say about the frequency of a problem or even the reality of a problem. Threads are viewed by those who are simply curious or by those who think that they might be able to help. WiFi can be a tricky area, if you gave the specific details of exactly what problem you are having and exactly what equipment you are using, then someone might be able to offer a useful suggestion.

The sticky at the top of this forum isn't from Apple but it does point to some Apple trouble shooting guides. These mainly talk about generic problems with WiFi that could occur with any device.

You don't seem to consider the chance that there could simply be a H/W problem with just your iPad (it happens). The approach you should follow now would be to ask for a replacement. If that new replacement iPad also doesn't work do NOT immediately jump to the conclusion that all iPads are defective but, rather, conclude that maybe there is something wrong in your environment that is causing the problem. It's nice to have confidence in Apple but, if something doesn't work, take action to get it corrected.

Seriously you are trying to argue that it is my iPad alone with a hardware problem? Have you looked at these forums?

Also, to my knowledge no one but an Apple employee can make a topic 'sticky'. To me that makes it 'from Apple.'

Thanks for your advice but I already said in my first post that I am taking it back, you don't need to tell me that that is what I should do now.

Yes, I've looked at these forums, but I think that your perspective is being skewed by that fact that you *do have a problem with your iPad*. Your problem could be H/W or environmental. I did not say that your iPad is the ONLY iPad with a H/W problem, there could be quite a few but certainly still a very small percentage of iPads sold (now well in excess of one million).

If you aren't happy with your iPad then taking it back seems to be the correct thing to do.

I got my iPad on May 1 and used it for two days with no problems. It found my wireless network and I entered my password and I was on. I used email and the Internet extensively and put my iPad in sleep mode many times. I even went out to the pool about 300 feet away and got a perfect uninterrupted signal. After two days it was down to about 20% charge so I plugged it in and after about two hours it was up to 100% and I unplugged it. I noticed that I was asked to give the WiFi network password again which was a little annoying but ok I did it and the network came up and I used it as usual. I shut it off and this morning I tried to check email etc and all I got was Not Connected dialogs from email, Safari and the settings screen. I entered the password again and again and sometimes it does not recognize it (wrong password) and so I carefully typed it from the back of the router or pasted it from my saved passwords and still it is not recognized. Even when it was recognized and connected both Mail and Safari could not connect and gave me a pop up telling me so. Sorry about the long explanation but I am hoping something in there will give a Apple a clue to what is wrong with it. As I said when I first bought it and for 2 days it worked perfectly until I recharged it.

I believe this is a fundamental problem that all iPads have. For some reason they are picky about network settings.

This is a known problem, Apple is aware of it. I won't go into details about my personal experience, but I know for sure that Apple knows about this problem.

In my opinion the easiest way to handle the problem is when you get prompted for your wifi password, just hit "cancel" and it will reconnect automatically without having to reenter your password.

I think this is a very minor problem in the overall picture. It's certainly not enough for me to want to return mine.

May 3, 2010 12:36 PM in response to Bob Sabiston

Mine reconnects within 5-10 seconds after hitting cancel.

Another thing that works is holding down the 'sleep' button for a few seconds, then hitting 'cancel' when you are prompted to swipe.

These both work for me as a temporary workaround on every network I've tested on.

The other temporary thing I've been doing is what was recommended by Princeton, when I'm done using the iPad I manually turn the wifi off, then manually turn it back on when I want to use it again. If I do this then I never get prompted for my password. I only experince this problem when I put the iPad to sleep while still connected to wifi, then when I wake it back up I get prompted for the wifi password shortly after.
