Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

Not in my case, dc202. It stated out of the blue (apparently) in late July after 4 months perfect running, got worse, got better and then got so bad that I cannot even install OS X on the machine it freezes even when that is going on. And Boot Camp/Windows has never been anywhere near mine.

From what I glean from this thread, one thing or a series, leads to a freeze and whether it is the hard disk, logic board or graphics (including switching), I cannot say. I have even considered humidity as I go in and out of air-conditioning and it is the rainy season here now.

I had the similar issues, first the entire system would freeze for unknown reasons. Apple replaced the MBP. I got a new one and it would still freeze but this time i would also see constant beach balls. It got so bad that I could not even boot up from the install dvd. Took it into the apple store and they determined it was bad memory. Since they replaced the memory stick, I only experienced one kernel panic when watching a flash based video online. I have not experienced any freezes or kernel panics since the installed the latest firmware update.

Thank you very much. Hopefully Apple will fix this mess. I am waiting to buy one and will not until if and when this is resolved.

This is a shame. It is a great computer and I had several months excellent use out of it, but could not recommend it to anyone now.

Have been a MacBook Pro advocate and have never experienced any trouble with any machine until I purchased the 2010 model a week ago. This machine has frozen a number of times and the cursor will lag as does some of the typing after pressing the key. The freezing required turning off the computer.
This has been a disconcerting disappointment. I keep checking for downloads that might address the problem.

The only machine I've ever seen that on (freeze during install) was a first-generation MacBook with a faulty logic board which got replaced under warranty. It could also be bad memory cards, but in any case (at least if you haven't replaced the memory yourself) I would take this machine back. Just to be sure, I would try an SMC reset first, though, in case the problem is due to faulty fan control. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

my MBP is experienced all of the symptoms listed on the first 20 pages (got tired after that)
i would like to add that my MBP worked fine since may when i bought it. it is only in the last 2 weeks i have noticed this freezing issue. now it happens once every couple of hours. most of the time it happens after switching applications and generally when i am running 3 or more applications. usually those are mail, firefox and itunes. but it has also frozen in preview, finder and when using expose. here are my stats for the tech guys.

    Hardware Overview:

    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core i5
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz

    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
    Boot ROM Version: MBP61.0057.B0C
    SMC Version (system): 1.58f15
    Serial Number (system): W80145S8AGV
    Hardware UUID: 5CDFF56C-9B07-5A21-A2E3-5A81C88E5FBD

Thanks for the response. I wondered about the logic board too. With the extreme events around (or following my freezes) this would make sense. I figured either that, the hard disk or the graphics.

    HI all!
Im a owner of Macbook Pro 13 MID 2010 and mine has same problems
System freeze ,mouse blocked, keyboard light off, keyboard blocked, only power off by button.
It happens randomly with aplications or only in finder ,or once was at start up after login ...
But i can work 3 days or more without problems,so for technical service will be difficult to see it.

Im a professional musician and i make my performances for a hundred of people with a laptop so i cant risk a set with this laptop no more...
Y tried to reinstall system, same problems...
    I think is a hardware in 13 ,15 and 17 macbook pro 2010.
I will not accept a hard drive repair,i will request a new unit.
It only has 2 months......And as my job depends of a laptop, i need a new one.
Now im again working with my old Powerbook G4 (2002) and still goes perfect !!!!

BTW: check this link, apple is returning new unots tosome users with same problems

Freezes were with traktor and without it on system....
External hard druve boot tested and also freezes.

    It happened always at home
    NO vibrations,working with headphones
And i was 3 times with it in my performances and no problems ,but i cant risk more, dont you think the same?

    Better a new one!
I think is hardware fail.Logic board or graphic card...
My ibook old had the same problems and finally went to trash after a warranty repair !!!
    Brave Apple!

Just want to give another update on my situation:

I have actually not had any freezes since the firmware update. However, I am still using gfxCardStatus.

Interestingly, when I have the card set to Intel (like when I am traveling and want the longest battery life) the computer will not recognize my external Cinema Display when I connect it. However, when I switch to NVIDIA, the external display is recognized no problem.... strange.

well, could you still try? won't hurt If the Sudden Motion Sensor is broken, it can continuously stop the drive.

Not strange at all. The nvidia is required to use an external monitor.
