Sep 29, 2010 12:17 PM in response to Kopyby johnny quid,i recently had a gateway laptop and it crashed due to faulty nvidia drivers
it is not only in apple forums that ppl are having issues with faulty nvidia products.
and if all the rest of mac products use snow leopard with no issues maybe it really is a hardware problem in the mbp line. -

Sep 29, 2010 3:30 PM in response to Artitronby Richard Hasal,A newly announced settlement in a class-action lawsuit against graphics maker Nvidia has entitled owners of a number of notebook computers, including two of Apple's MacBook Pro models, to repairs or monetary compensation.

Sep 29, 2010 5:50 PM in response to Kopyby johnny quid,i was totally disappointed when an update from nvidia caused my perfectly working gateway machine to overclock the gpu till it fried
i was seriously considering a toshiba as a replacement bbut i fell in love with my nieces mbp and so i got one. she has the 5.4 model with 10.5.8 installed and she experiences no crashes or hangs or freezes
the other mac products that use the same 10.6.4 OS and i3 i5 and i7 processors do these experience the same problems
If not then it would really be safe to surmise that the fault lies in the mbp and not the software itself.
3k+ is way too much to pay for sub par products and scant courtesy and support

Sep 30, 2010 6:07 AM in response to Artitronby ewalthert,I know this is discussed in another threat, but is anybody of you experiencing this issue alongside the freezing? http://www.youtube.com/user/noreftako (sorry I did not read all 1100 replies first)
I'm asking because I'm having both issues on my MacBook Pro 15" i7

Oct 1, 2010 12:28 AM in response to Artitronby mbpro13,I tried doing a search to avoid repeating questions and answers and found nothing.
I have a MBP 13 inch and it freezes very often, using different applications.
Was wondering if the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9 will help (it's meant to be for 15 and 17 inch models).
Can't take it to an Apple store as there is none in this country, they don't have a service representative, and when I called the number in the US they don't even know where the country I live in is, and start suggesting for me to go to places which are 7 hour flights away.
Very dissapointed.
Any tips? -
Oct 1, 2010 4:47 PM in response to mbpro13by slog,mbpro13 - how long have you had your macbookpro13? If possible, you should try to send it back for a refund. -
Oct 1, 2010 5:15 PM in response to mbpro13by Kopy,Mbpro13 WELLCOME to the ****!
jejeeje
If your mac is less than 15 days ,run to refund..if not , think about you will have a defective machine forever..
Also you can go to apple service, and possible they doesnt see any error ,then you are like the first day
Good Apple service too!!
I think they didndo anything more than Apple Hardware Test in my laptop ...
My machine hasnt any logs from days in service center ,only 6 hours!!!
Dissapointed! -
Oct 2, 2010 6:26 AM in response to Kopyby louise_b,Hi all,
I've posted on here previously describing my issue and progress. Here's an update and for people new to the board, what I would suggest doing if you've recently started having this problem.
Brief background: I had intermittent freezes (still able to move mouse but nothing responds, have to restart using power button) since purchasing MBP in July 2010. Standard MBP 15". ?related to restoring files using migration assistant, or transferring to/from external harddrive, or graphics switching? I don't have virtual machine or windows so it can't be that. Phonecalls to applecare support and a trip to a local service provider... no luck.
More recently I took the MBP into genius bar. They replaced the hard drive and also advised that I shouldn't restore using migration assistant but instead should do so manually. That was several weeks ago and since then I haven't had a single freeze! (Don't wanna jinx it, but so far so good!)
SO if you're having these freezing problems I'd suggest:
1) if you just got the computer, and are still within the two week / 10 day grace period, get a replacement
2) if not, do something about it asap. Given that it can take a few days to weeks for the problem to reappear, trying different fixes and seeing if they work can be a long process. Start by doing all the things the apple phone support people will tell you to do anyway: reset the PRAM and SMC; check for and install any software/firmware updates. Failing that, run a hardware check. Most likely the first three steps won't make a difference, and the hardware check won't find any problems.
3) next, wipe the harddrive and reinstall the OS. When you restore your files, don't do so from time machine - do it manually using drag and drop.
4) maybe one of these steps will fix the problem. If not, go into genius bar. You can then tell them you've done all of the above and still had problems. I went in on their busiest day and they were friendly and helpful, and happily replaced the harddrive within hours without question.
5) if you keep having problems, keep going in to genius bar and get parts replaced. Eventually (after 3x parts replacement) they should give you a new machine.
6) in the unlikely event that after completing the above steps you still have a freezing machine - get a refund.
I agree with everyone that this issue is super-frustrating and really shouldn't happen on a brand new computer that cost several grand. BUT that also means apple should do all they can to fix it. Don't just sit there complaining that there's no solution and wait for the day when apple might release a fix. This is actually a great computer apart from the freezes - get the problem sorted and start enjoying it.
This is all just based on one person's experience and it may be that these steps haven't worked for other people. Nonetheless I hope it helps. Good luck everyone! -
Oct 2, 2010 7:30 AM in response to Graham K. Rogersby markfenlon,Sadly I have the freeze problem. I bought my MB-Pro (13.3" Intel 2.4 - serial No. W8030WSCATM, Boot ROM Version: MBP71.0039.B05) on 14th August 2010. It lasted until 13th Sept when the curser moved all by itself, then froze. A USB mouse gave me some relief for a few hours but also suffered the same fate. A trip to the Apple service centre resulted in the replacement of the logic board. I then found the camera had stopped working so guess the Techs. have forget to connect it back the the board. Here I am again on 2nd. October with several "freezes" and the curser vanishing. The only way so far to retrieve the situation is to shut the laptop down (control - command - power off) and the power-up. So yet another trip to the service centre is needed this Monday.
I have to say how bitterly disappointed I am with Mac's quality, given that my previous white Mac Book fell apart, despite 2 years of caring use.
Any suggestions?

Oct 2, 2010 2:15 PM in response to Kopyby GoTVols, just call the Apple support number and continue to ask for each person's supervisor if you don't get satisfaction from whoever is helping you. You have to be firm and push just like with any purchase that isn't performing to your expectations. Push and push!
Most of us that have had problems use this approach, we don't wait for some "miracle" to happen all on its on we are proactive. Wait for some post on here that will solve all your problems if you want, good luck on that strategy.
You spent what you consider a lot of money, now push for satisfaction or move on.
