Try to disable the sudden motion sensor:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934?viewlocale=en_US
I'm afraid to perform live with my i5 as well. I had one freeze while rehearsing, though I didn't disable the sudden motion sensor. My macbook pro kept playing, midi input working, everything moving on screen, but no mouse input working. I waited about 10 minutes and the macbook came back. Next time I'll try to disabe the sudden motion sensor.

I find your report to be encouraging, actually. Are you saying that, even though the display froze, the computer Sept responding? If this were the case, it might not be a deal breaker for me as far as live performance with Mainstage. I use a "set it and forget it" type of configuration, using MIDI keyboards and program changes instead of using the laptop. I dont even need to see the screen.
Can you confirm that the computer still responds if the screen is frozen?
Thanks! -
Oct 8, 2010 11:30 AM in response to Mitch Towne1by mgcharlie,I can confirm that the computer keeps working while the screen is frozen. There are other reports of this behavior on this thread, but there are several kinds freeze described here too. Next time I'll turn the sudden motion sensor off, as this is a specific advice by apple to the kind of situation we're working on. -
Oct 8, 2010 3:42 PM in response to Artitronby AButo,My 3 weeks i7 just got three panics related to the Webkitpluginhost and also the screen garbled graphics issue with Safari and Firefox also.
I contacted Apple, talked to the first level support eng, second level and they escalated to the Engineering level. All the tests, no errors were found. Provided all the panics logs that i've been collected and now the eng provided the analysis:
"I have received recommendation that it be arranged to have the Main Logic Board replaced on your MacBook Pro to resolve the WebKitPluginHost related Kernel Panics issue."
So, replace the Main Logic Board may be the solution according to Apple. I will schedule soon and let you know. Asked if it is related to NVidia card and they could not answer it. -
Oct 8, 2010 5:46 PM in response to AButoby RockTheGlobe,I had exactly the same problem... MBP 15" core i7 that had kernel panics at least once a week related to WebKitPluginHost and the graphics extensions. The Genius Bar replaced my RAM, I reinstalled the system software, and the Genius Bar replaced my logic board -- none of it worked. Apple finally replaced the machine entirely... sadly, two weeks after I got the new machine, that one had a kernel panic as well -- same problem with WebKitPluginHost and the graphics extensions.
Strangely enough, I have a sneaking suspicion that the issue is actually Flash-related, specifically involving v10.1. I installed the beta of Flash 10.2, and I haven't had any problems since then. -
Oct 12, 2010 12:55 AM in response to RockTheGlobeby Dematrix,First I would like to apologize if this is a wrong thread.
Well this is my scenario...
Was running Google Earth and screenshot few Maps for some trial run and while browsing the captured image using "Quick View" by pressing SPACEBAR from the keyboard. The first image loads and when I press the right arrow to browse thru the next image, my computer blackout and had to hold the Power button to restart my computer back alive.
I have 10.6.4 installed and also having Windows 7 (64 bit) on a Bootcamp as well.
I agree a graphic intense work forcing the NVIDIA card to freeze but on a fresh boot it happens without any graphical program running.
Happened this once when I bought my computer in April but never saw this again until yesterday and now it has been the 5th time. I send the report few times to Apple since yesterday.
What is the cause?
Do we need an update for the Firmware? Also I suspect this is due to the recent Graphical Firmware update that I have done using Software Update.
NOTE: This happens only when my OSX is running not on Bootcamp or Parallel Desktop running.
Please I need a fix... This is driving me nuts.
Thanks

Oct 12, 2010 2:57 AM in response to Artitronby mingvest,Just to add my experience to the topic.
Bought a 17inch MBP i7 a month ago. I do video editing.
All was well until I travelled to England and have since experienced freeze after freeze.
I'm using the Apple adaptors for the UK voltage.
I had no problems in my NYC but since I have come to England I haven't been able to work because of the freezes.
My previous MBP, bought about 5 years ago, had no such problem with the different locations.
Each time in has frozen I have usually been on safari on the web but a couple of times it froze before i could even get on the web. Once it just had trouble starting.
Tried to download the EFI update but get an error message and Apple's solution of downloading again doesn't seem to work.
When I get back to the States i'll see if it's still ok on American voltage. -
Oct 12, 2010 8:10 AM in response to Artitronby coffeemonopoly,I thought my first freeze which I came back to after leaving the computer alone for quite awhile was a fluke but I got my second freeze today and this was while working on a report which luckily I'd saved not too long ago or I'd be much more angry.
I bought my MBP 13" early August this year and it's been working fine until recently. Am I lucky it's lasted this long or unlucky because something made it break? So far it's only frozen when plugged in but since it's only happened twice this might be a coincidence.
I noticed the supposed fix for the 15" and 17" which I surmise from later posts didn't work that well but why wasn't the problem with the 13" MBPs addressed at all? Come on, Apple. -
Oct 12, 2010 8:22 AM in response to Artitronby Artitron,If you are just coming to this thread, your quickest path to resolution is to report your issue to Apple to raise visibility for anyone experiencing this issue and the engage technical support to help you troubleshoot your specific hardware.
This thread has become a bit unwieldy and hard to read. If you have the time to read it there has been some good comments, ideas, investigation, and summarization by a number of people. Unfortunately, there is no immediate root cause or definitive fix to report.
If you are having this freezing issue with your new MacBook Pro (2010), please consider doing the following:
1. Report that your Mac Book Pro (2010) freezes to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
2. Contact Apple Technical Support to request support, troubleshooting, and replacement hardware via http://www.apple.com/support/contact/ -
Oct 12, 2010 8:32 AM in response to Artitronby Artitron,I'd like to add an extra bit of empirical information. Since replacing my first MBP - things have been quite stable with no freezes in months. However, I run Windows7 on the machine about 95% of the time. If I understand how the graphics switching is working, this leaves potentially two direct possibilities for my original (and particular) freezing issue:
1. It really was a hardware issue and I returned a lemon.
2. There is an issue with the Intel/Nvidia graphics switching solution introduced on these new 2010 models.
As I understand it, when running Windows7 - the graphics mode is essentially locked onto the Nvidia chipset. If this is true, it does cast a serious look at the newly introduced graphics-switching as a culprit. I had been using gfxCardStatus early on to try and identify/prevent the switching - but that never really identified the issue as there was no logging when frozen.
It is more speculation on my part, but I would be interested to hear if others who have tried to lock their video mode to one chipset have regained stability. -

Oct 12, 2010 1:53 PM in response to Kopyby GoTVols, what is robbery?
every product in use today has a small number of problems for a number of reasons, from production errors. Sorry you are one of the very few but Apple has sold hundred's of thousands of the new MBP with no problems. Ever own a new car that has problems? The dealer or maker NEVER replace it. I have had new cars with problems and they don't recall the whole new model line for a very small people effected. Just be patient Apple has a good track record with fixing the problems of the small minority. -
Oct 13, 2010 4:06 AM in response to Artitronby houli,no haven't. get my MBP back from repair tomorrow again. I am sure it will freeze again. 2nd time already, what a fun. in 6 month it was 5 weeks in repair. nice availability rate, congrats to Apple for this. Next time I am going to spent 8k€ in the hope this won't happen to me again rofl. -
Oct 13, 2010 4:57 AM in response to Artitronby Radfish,I have a 13" MBP - purchased in June. OS 10.6.4, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDA GeForce 320M video, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB Harddrive. I started having the 'freezing' problem about a month ago. Never am I able to use the 'force quit' options to resolve - always a hard reset using power button. I can generally count on this happening 1-2 times every time I use the MBP. That's daily. I just moved to Mac from a windows pc and there are a lot of things I really like, but this problem must be fixed!
