Nov 15, 2010 12:44 AM in response to Artitronby BarryHaanstra,My Macbook Pro 17" (i7, aug 2010) had some random freezing problems as well.
It would completely freeze, without any messages in the system log. Nothing would respond - even if I closed the lid the backlight would remain on.
I disabled the 'Automatic graphics switching' last week and since then it worked fine. I guess the whole intel/nvidia switching stuff doesn't really work on my Macbook.
Strange thing is - I have some colleagues with exactly the same model, and they never had any issues at all. -
Nov 15, 2010 1:19 AM in response to BarryHaanstraby Kopy,This thread is going really worst every day...
Since June (my MBP13") till today, people having same problems..
JUE;JULY;AUGUST;SEPTEMBER MID NOVEMBER.......

Nov 15, 2010 8:57 AM in response to Artitronby KimHogberg,I am running a Macbook Pro 17" Intel Core i5 2.53 GHz from 2010 bought in Australia directly from Authorised reseller.
I have had this problem as well
Freezes sometimes instantly when starting up sometimes after sleep or after a few hours.. sometimes during playing games and so on. Everything just freezes up and I cant move nothing and usually it doesn't un-freeze neither. Full power shutdown and reboot is only solution
Since i turned off Automatic Graphic Switching and using gfxCardstatus with the settings Intel HD when power source not plugged in and Nvidia when power source plugged seemes to work for me..
After i turned that off i tried running several apps (no crash) tried pressuring the mac with games ( no crash) sleep mode (no crash) so yeah for a computer of this cost this is very dissapointing. I probably wont buy another Mac unless this is sorted out by Apple very soon! -
Nov 15, 2010 2:19 PM in response to KimHogbergby slog, kimhogberg - "I probably wont buy another Mac unless this is sorted out by Apple very soon!"
The "very soon" time period ended months ago. Apple has not acknowledged a problem. They expect all the loyal followers to continue to spend their hard earned/saved money for a product that is INFERIOR. I sincerely hope people who are planning a purchase come here first to read about this problem. Maybe then some will save their money or buy a Windows 7 PC - which by the way - works great. -
Nov 15, 2010 2:56 PM in response to slogby Kopy,Of course we must advise to friends and collegues about this....
In my Facebook,Myspace, website as artist is noticed of course.
This last weekend i had to make my performance with my old Powerbook g4 768mhz (2002)
Any freezes,any problems.
I dont want to know what could happened if i go with the MBP 13 sold weeks ago in second hand.....
But apple of course say this is a free apple user forum so anyone can write anything...
Yes ,but nobody spend his time to write lies.........
THEY LIE -
Nov 15, 2010 5:58 PM in response to Artitronby Duk242,Just thought I'd add, I had 4 crashes on my MacBook in the first 2 months I had it, since then however I've had no issues at all. So far that's 6 months of no issues at all.
Not sure what fixed it, I've kept my machine up to date and have since had no more issues.
For all of you overreacting in this thread:
The world is not going to end. You will be fine. Don't Panic. -
Nov 15, 2010 7:31 PM in response to Duk242by Kopy,Yes,mine also had no freezes in 2 months,,,,,
but a day before sell it,it frozen again!
Nothing is solved! Only hidden....
ITs not the end of the world of course, but is the begining of the end of Apple care and quality,in my own experience.
If you are happy with "some freezes" ,me not.
In 8 years with my old titanium im still waiting to see that "freeze"... -
Nov 16, 2010 1:07 AM in response to Artitronby BarryHaanstra,Right, forget my comment above. It just appeared to be better without the graphics switching, but I just had a hard freeze again. So far, the only thing that seems to resolve it is to keep the machine plugged in and never try to run on battery power - which kind of ***** since its a laptop. -
Nov 16, 2010 1:23 PM in response to pip-inby Merls1003,Macbook Pro 15" i7 >TOSHIBA MK5055GSXF: HDD
Froze and actually starting to run very slow in general, Apparently no hardware faults. -
Nov 16, 2010 2:03 PM in response to Kopyby Jackie Yu,I'm having freeze issue on my 3 days old 15-inch MBP as well...which I opened another thread on kernel panic...
I'm have a titanium G4 powerbook as well and it still run fine...I'm starting to feel disappointed on macs and the OSs...and that's the reason I don't want to extend any apple care...
I never come to forum to search for solution when I'm using my G4/G5 macs...but now I come often when Intel generation started... -
Nov 17, 2010 3:01 PM in response to BarryHaanstraby SKEL_73,Just had yet another sudden total system failure. Screen cascades grey and message says to hold down power button to restart. I've never had a Mac that had these kinds of problems, this often. I paid a lot of money for this and I rely on being able to trust that the hardware will not randomly crap out on me.
I feel bad for people who want to use their Macbook Pro to perform live audio on stage - I would be nervous to do that with my machine.

Nov 17, 2010 7:35 PM in response to Artitronby jennyflipz,This is so frustrating. I used the migration assistant to move everything from my old MBP titanium to this new one two days ago. When I run any programs that moved over, it freezes. Deleted preferences and receipts. I re-installed all the suspected culprits with the original disks, but it still freezes after running for about a half hour or so. Final Cut Pro. MS Word. Mail. It doesn't matter.
I ran disk repair. I did a safe boot and was introduced to kernel panics. PANIC? For real?
Tried to install the firmware update that Apple recommends for freezing machines, but "this software is not supported on your system."
So far behind on my work and seriously regretting this purchase. Going to the Genius Bar tomorrow. Will report back. This is just terrible. -
Nov 17, 2010 7:59 PM in response to Artitronby aprilmac,I've been having frequent kernel panics...freezing...****. Tried everything and it all came down to bad ram. I put back the original ram and my headaches have gone away. My new problem is that I want 8 gigs of ram. any suggestions? I used the muskin ram, but that didn't work out so well. -
Nov 17, 2010 8:02 PM in response to aprilmacby GoTVols,I've never had any problems with OWC ram. Competitive pricing too. -
Nov 18, 2010 1:29 PM in response to GoTVolsby Revoli,Well I'll give a little update on my situation. As I told a while back I used to have the problem pretty much everyday/once every two days. Then it suddenly dissapeared only to reappear after a month and a half. Two weeks after that it happened again and now after a week it hasn't happened yet, though I'm sure it will. I'll have to take mine for repairing for another reason (Some sensor/sensors are faulty) so I'm gonna have them take a look at this problem aswell.
The problem is the chances of freezing while there are slim, so they won't be able to confirm the problem and as we know, it doesn't show on any logs. And as far as I remember there hasn't been a universal fix? If I remember correct for some replacing logic board has helped for some replacing ram or hard drive. So to anyone who has/hasn't gotten this fixed after taking it to apple what got done and did it or didn't it help?
I hope to give them as much info as possible and will suggest they take a peek at this topic.
