Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I did tried your trick but it didn;t worked. The sleep doesn't activate when the mbp is in freezing state. Only the mouse cursor is moving and from time but not always it changed the shape to summer magic ball.

But another trick seems to work at least for me and at least till now. Five days without freezing and I really stress my mbp.

The trick is gfxCardStatus + I activated the remote acces through ssh so in this way if it's freezing again I will try to acces remotely.

Hey guys, I´m not sure that my problem is excact problem this thread deals with but i´m desperate. I have this terrible freezing problem but my screen is not just freezing. It turns completely black like the macbook turned itself off but it is still running. When the freeze occurs and I´m listening to music I get a sound like a broken record. I get this problem both under osx 10.6.6 and windows 7 via bootcamp. For this reason I think its not a software issue. I can reproduce the crash anytime because it always crashes when I try to play minecraft. It is really annoying and I fear all the hard reboots might destroy my machine. I tried many tipps mentioned hear but nothing works for me.

@datoff, I cannot see your problem. You can reproduze the crash at will and so it will be easy for you to get your machine replaced or repaired. Just go and see your dealer.

This will be my next step but i´m hesitating because a friend told me apple wouldn´t try my minecraft suggestion but rather using their own tests on the machine. I´ve read alot about people sending in their machine and getting it back without a result. This would mean I would loose my work machine for at least two weeks. I can´t just go to my dealer because I ordered it at cyberport. What I will do next week is go to gravis and get my keyboard cleaned. I will ask them for their opinion and experiences.

This is exactly the same issue I am having. I don't have a solution yet (haven't taken it in to apple), but I plan on purchasing another macbook to use while mine is in for repairs. As long as it's returned within 14 days it shouldn't cost you anything.

Check with your Apple store on that. When I bought my MBP I didn't know if I wanted the matte or gloss display, so I asked if I could buy one and exchange it for the other if I didn't like it. They told me exchange was ok but it would cost me a restocking fee. Even for an exchange! Even if I exchanged for a more expensive one!

When I was searching about my freezing issue, I came across a few threads (and fixes/solutions) for this happening to people running Bootcamp. There's an issue with the gfx driver that comes on the DVD. It's not the right one, or doesn't work correctly with Windows 7, so you have to get the driver from elsewhere. Sorry for being so vague, I don't have the URLs to the posts or anything but one of them was on Apple Discussions.

I have the 15 inch MacBook Pro with the 2.66 processor and I7.
I have had this since the spring of 2010. My problem was that I was or am getting the pin-wheel. I have felt that I was bumping up to the max on he 500g hard drive.
I have pulled off my photos and some media and has seemed to help. I would like to upgrade to the 8 gigs of RAM and a larger hard drive.
I have found some reasonable pricing for RAM and a larger hard drive. I am concerned with the hard drive fitting and will these upgrades void the warranty on the Mac.

Yes, if you're very low on disk space and RAM, you may experience serious slow-downs because it gets increasingly difficult for the system to allocate new swap space.

RAM is really inexpensive these days. I have 8GB RAM in my MBP (same model as yours) and I couldn't do with less with my needs. In fact, I just upgraded my brand new iMac to 16GB in order to be able to run linux and windows in virtual machines and still keep enough memory left for OS X.

It's quite easy to upgrade these machines, just be careful when you open the cover that you keep track of where the different-length screws fit (follow the manual and note that most of the small screws should be screwed in at an angle).

Regarding fitting an HD: I think you need to make sure that the HD has 9.5mm height. This will limit you to 750GB max (still, I think), and even with 750GB drives you should watch out that you don't get an older higher model. I just ordered WD Scorpio Blue WD7500BPVT for my son's 4 year old MacBook (1st generation black Core 2), which I'm sure will fit fine. Some months ago I upgraded my daughter's 4 year old white MacBook with a similar 640GB models. These work very fine even with these old machines (in fact, they are less hot than the original disks).

    I have a MBP 15", i5, 4gb ram, 500 gb 7200 hdd, OSX 10.6.6 bought december 2010.

I have expirinced alot of freezing, primarily in Photoshop CS5 and Firefox.. I've tried the method that includes use of gfxCardStatus.

It seem to have isolated the problem to Photoshop CS5, and mainly when i use the mark-tool or free transform-tool on heavy object.

I get the beachball spinning, and shortly after, i can move the mouse around, but not click anything, and the keyboard shortcuts don't work.

It seems to me that it is software related.

I hope this is software related.
Got a (brand new) i7 MBP with a 500GB 5400 rpm Hitachi HD. This computer is a replacement from the previous i7 MBP I had before. And guess what? I replaced the first one for this same reason, still I get these freezes and hangs all the time.

**** I hate Apple right now, they better get an update fixing it all...

While I don't have a lot of "Freezes", they do occur. I've noticed that I can do a Permissions repair and immediately repeat it and have the exact same repairs done again-about a half a page fo repairs.
When I tried the suggested EFI updater, I get the message: "This software is not supported on your system." Go figure. TIme for Genius Bar.

Ok peeps, just reinstalled Mac OS X 10.6.3 over my previous 10.6.6 partition, and for now freezes are gone it seems. So it may work for some people. This proves my issue is definitely caused by software updates.

What I did is just put the original DVD that came with my MBP. I'm waiting for a new Snow Leopard update and will be trying it to see if they fixed the freezes and hangs. Otherwise I will once again "downgrade" to 10.6.3.

    Good luck to all

i came over from Windows/Dell this past summer. i never had the issues on my Windows machines that i'm routinely having on this Macbook Pro 15" i5...It'll freeze every other week, and it's just not capable of watching freaking video without stutter every several seconds. this machine cost $2400?

    LOL whatever.
