Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I got one of the new MacBook's yesterday with the AMD graphics and I think I'm having this exact problem. Whenever I do something that would probably switch it from the Intel graphics to AMD, the whole system freezes. I hear a fan in the laptop rev up and gets louder and louder, then about 5 seconds later the system is frozen. I'm going to take it into the store and see what they think, once I find a good way to reproduce the issue.

What software have you installed on your machine since getting it? (If you don't mind sharing)

My thoughts exactly. To the OP: Did you transfer programs and home directories from an older mac?

I think some of the problems reported in this thread can be due to SW which is incompatible with Snow Leopard. The worst offenders may be old system extensions carried over from previous systems. Things that I've had to remove very manually myself from machines in my family after they got Snow Leopard include remnants of old Parallels installations, ACD See extensions and old EyeTV extensions. The old parallels kernel extensions made one machine so unstable that it would sometimes freeze during startup.

I think Apple could have saved the users from a lot of trouble if they had kept the "archive and install" option instead of forcing everyone to do an upgrade of their existing system.

reply to my own post, I brought my MacBook Pro into the Apple Store, had a "Genius" take a look at it, and it kernel panic'd right off the bat for him. I showed him printouts of previous panic logs, detailing the fact that they ALWAYS contain

and he concluded that the logic board needs replacement. I'm not so sure this is the source of the problem, but I'm hopeful. The part should come in early next week, and once everything is replaced, I'll report back my findings.

With regards to software installed, I'm not so sure any specific piece of software is the culprit in this case, since I've had these panics happen RIGHT after a FORMAT and REINSTALL. They happened with 10.6.3, before software updating, and with 10.6.4, 10.6.5, 10.6.6.

Crossing my fingers that the logic board is in fact the problem..

Anyone remember what the original solution is to this thread? Did OP take his MBP into the Apple Store and have something replaced?

Interesting, I was thinking of selling my current one for the new ones but after this I'll hold off for a bit.
17" i5 with GT330M, my problem is random freezing of the screen with severe graphic distortions, sometimes with the spinning pinwheel. The trigger seems to be graphic switching to the nVidia card, most times it switches smoothly, then sometimes something goes wrong and the only fix is a hard shutdown. But other times it is already on the nVidia card and the graphic distortions + freeze happen randomly. Had this macbook pro for about a year, first got the problem about 1 month in, then long stretches of not having it, then 5 times in a day. Searched around and found these threads but no solution, Apple doesn't even acknowledge that there is a problem.
Thankfully I don't use my MBP for much work but it ****** me off that my $2500 MBP is less reliable than my 4 year old $1100 Dell Inspiron that it was supposed to replace.

Well i'v just tried to wipe my mbp and stay with osx 10.6.4 that came along with the laptop.

The result has been partly successful. I've had some wierd pixel erros (or whar i shold describe it as).

And just now I had to force boot the computer because of suddenly freeze. It didn't register any clicks from the mouse (or trackpad), aswell at keyboard cmd+Q.

I've now recorded the instances with my phone and published on youtube, hoping that this documentation could make Apple solve it, and hopefully fix it.

I'm from Denmark and can thereby not return it to an Apple store, but a premium reseller.. I will return when i got more news.

After suffering through this issue since i purchased my mbp in mid 2010 i can now report i actually found a solution that worked for me.

Turning off the sudden motion sensor has fixed my panics. I haven't had a lock up in 2 weeks now. Which is about the longest ive ever made it without a freeze since it came out of the box. Happy days. Thanks for nothing apple. Thanks to those people who suggested this in previous posts.

I believe this is excellent advice. I have a MBP 15" 2.8 worked great, no problems. I installed Kingston RAM (KTA-MB1066K2/8G) and within a few days.... The Death Screen appeared.
Since I had encountered these freezes with my MBP 2.6 and am quite aware of the problems encountered with the MBP's, I was not a happy camper.
After thinking about the problem, I decided to pull the RAM. I have not encountered any problems or crashes since removing the Kingston RAM (KTA-MB1066K2/8G).
This is my question... Is the Kingston RAM (KTA-MB1066K2/8G incompatible with 2010 MBP 2.8 or is it just a bad stick. Any ideas welcome. Buy.com will be happy to replace the RAM.... You see my problem.
    Thanks in advance.

I purchased a refurbished 17" on January 23rd. It was running fine with no freezes until last night when it froze on me. After restarting, it froze repeatedly after about 10 minutes of using the computer, wether I opened any applications or not.

My first reaction was to reinstall the OS. I thought it solved the issue until about 30 minutes in when it froze again. I then did some more research, and disabled the dynamic graphics switching. Thought I had it solved again, but another freeze came after about an hour of usage. It now freezes consistently after using the computer for 45 minutes to an hour. It also froze once at the log-in screen.

I will be taking it to a Genius tomorrow. I didn't pay 1900 bucks for a paperweight.

I had just finished watching a 720p movie on my HDTV through the Mini DisplayPort (using VLC, which used to crash it) and everything was looking fine. I've never had a panic caused by com.apple.filesystems.ntfs(3.3) before, so I'm hoping it's just a fluke..

Just got a call from the retail store, who is looking at my MBP.

And they didn't find any errors on the laptop so far.

He told be that they had expirenced some errors with the i7 machines - but mine is a i5..

Can't belive that they can't find any error at all.. Can these errors be caused by a bad motherboard or?

I've jus picked my MBP up from service. They couldn't find any errors or mimic the errors that i have expirenced.

They even demanded payment for their time debugging the machine, since no errors was found. But i talked them out of it.

I even showed him the videos i posted on youtube (and above on this page)..

He said that he suspected the CS5 suite, for causing the errors, and recommended me to try with the CS4 suite instead.
