Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I've jus picked my MBP up from service. They couldn't find any errors or mimic the errors that i have expirenced.

They even demanded payment for their time debugging the machine, since no errors was found. But i talked them out of it.

I even showed him the videos i posted on youtube (and above on this page)..

He said that he suspected the CS5 suite, for causing the errors, and recommended me to try with the CS4 suite instead.

Wow, I can't believe they wanted you to pay for their diagnostics. Your laptop is still under warranty, correct? Not that any 2 machines are the same (in practice), but I'm running CS5 and I use Photoshop for long periods of time to edit/process photos and mine is running fine still. I wonder if there are people (other than the 1 who posted here) who bought the new MBP and is having this issue with the AMD graphics chip. Seems like a problem with the OS's graphics switching process.

very interesting to discover on another thread that also 2011 MBP are not freezing-free.......what a burden! I was close to change over but not sure now (I had freezing with my 2010 MBP only once within first two weeks)....so far so good...

Turning off the sudden motion sensor has fixed my panics. I haven't had a lock up in 2 weeks now. Which is about the longest ive ever made it without a freeze since it came out of the box. Happy days. Thanks for nothing apple. Thanks to those people who suggested this in previous posts.

    Here is the link...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1934

I tried that and it worked for me too, not a good fix though especially because we're shutting down the Sudden Motion Sensor, but it'll do it for now until 10.6.7 comes out.

Also, I have new memory inside (G.SKILL), could that be the case? But this thing worked well before 10.6.6 upgrade!

I´m not sure if I understand this. What does turning off the sensors has to do with it? Do they have an impact on the system when it stands completely still? I will try this later when home from work but it really sounds strange to me. Maybe someone could explain it to me.

Well, i'm back.. My MBP just froze again! I had nothing else open than Firefox!

And when I think about it.. It has actually happend quite often that the freezing is when i'm either within FireFox or has FireFox running in the background? I don't know if any one of you have experienced the same?

I'm trying to switch over to Chrome to eliminate this error.. Don't know if this is just a waste of time or not.. i'll will return when i know more..

It shouldn't take me long to get back to you.. I just experienced the exact same freeze with only Chrome open.

This simply can't be happening. I don't know what to do at this point.. I've spend a small fortune for a useless piece of junk..

I tried ALL the other fixes to no avail. Finally after catching the black screen of death on video Apple agreed to replace the logic board. Apple returned my laptop yesterday with the repair and so far so good.

Maybe this is causing the error that we all are having..?

I will confront the Reseller who looked at my machine yesterday..

Well, he refused that the Intel Chip could cause the error.

He tried open up firefox and run serval tabs with youtube hd video etc. and it did not crash/freeze.

He now would take it in, and call Apple.

I showed him the logs, but he could not see anything out of it.

I can't sleep at night, and i have a constant hurt in my stomace, because of this.. I've used all of my savings ($3350) on this laptop and it do not work.

I don't think so, and it doesn't apply to your machine anyway.

A bit hard to tell, but that certainly could have been due to faulty main board, graphics card or memory.

I called to the repairer at the Reseller store where they had my MBP in for diagnosis, and asked the if i could come down at work at the laptop for an hour or two, so they could see if it crash. And they agreed to!

Before a came he replaced my RAM block with two new 1gb block insted of my two 2gb.

So i went down there and began working. Had about 5 tabs open in Firefox with youtube included + Photoshop CS5 with one semi large document.

And it froze after 10 minutes and the screen got the wierd pixel thing again..

The repairer said that it without a doubt was the motherboard and that he would order one emedialy.

He said that he had to see it for himself since he couldn't find any errors on the laptop with their software from Apple.

I just hope that this will solve it for me.. I will ofcause return when i get my laptop back..

I was having the same issues as the original poster with the screen going black and not responding. It seemed to do it when I was streaming media (youtube or pandora. It didn't matter which browser either, it did it in safari, chrome and firefox. I tried archive and reinstall, I even wiped it and left the 0s at os at 10.6.3. Its been fine for about a week. Tonight I had it on and running with no programs open. I plugged in my external monitor and it acted like it was switching screens (both went black and flickered), but then it froze. The screens went black and the keypad lit up and was unresponsive, only way to stop it was to hard boot. I attached my error log. Can anyone tell me what I'm looking for in this?
Any guidance is appreciated. I own applecare, but I don't want to deal with that unless I know it is a problem and not a user error.

    Thank you in advance.
