Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

yes, I had artifacts and pixel corruption prior to the freezing of the screen on the NVIDIA GPU, in many instances, not always.

I received my replacement machine yesterday and so far so good. It's probably still too soon to declare victory, but my "bad" machine wouldn't run this long. Anyway, will post in a day or two, which should be enough.

Do you think this issue may be limited to MBP's shipped to the U.S? Just curious.

@baseliner, yes, it looks like the Intel card might be able to drive the HDMI port (1080p is 1920×1080, which is a fairly low resolution compared to what you can get on a external monitor).

I'm pretty sure this was the resolution even w/ the Nvidia card. But I'll have to test again to be sure.. either way, 1920x1080 (or maybe 1200) is the most I can handle w/o the need for a magnifying lens..

I didn't format several times. I took my MBP into the Genius Bar, they quickly confirmed it was an issue (since I brought it in frozen) and ordered a replacement right then and there. A week later, I returned and they swapped my CTO MBP for a new one.

I haven't had any issues with the new one yet. Whether that indicates a hardware failure is yet to be determined.

Additionally, I don't believe it is in everyone's interest to advocate installing a beta OS patch to resolve this issue unless directed by Apple. Apple explicitly states that you should not install the updated 10.6.4 patch on a production system. My laptop, for all intents and purposes, is a production system. I try to produce work on it.

I should not have to install a pre-release patch to maintain stability and prevent hard freezes that steal my time and effort.

That said, if you are experiencing the hard freeze issue, are out of options, and are willing to give it a shot - trying the beta 10.6.4 patch might be for you... but please don't ask us to be your testers for quality assurance.

I had two freezes in a week. Only the pointer moves, nothing else. The first time it happened, I had to hold the power button down to turn it off and restart the MBP. The second time, I waited and it came back about 10 minutes later. On both episodes I was running on the battery and gfxcardstatus was showing nvidia.

people with replaced units please post if the new macbooks are freezing or not on this thread:

    I had freeze issue's on my 15" i5 macbook.
Returned it and got a 17" i7 , day 2 and no crashing/freezing so far.

Notice the different gMux and ROM revision!!
Does anyone in here have freezing issue's with the same versions?

Nice eye. My 15" i7 -- which experiences the crashes, has the same ROM version (3532), but a gMux version of 1.9.21.

I have a more recent ROM than yours but in both cases your gmux is higher than mine. What the gmux is representative of?
This should be something updatable via s/w or firmware i guess.
    Thanks

gmux is the firmware for the card.

Look at this older post regarding the previous macbook, so we can assume they are able to update it.

    http://www.slashgear.com/apple-release-17-inch-macbook-pro-graphics-update-26389 43/

Still no freezing on my side....(gMux Version: 1.9.22) going to to some heavy gaming again to stress the machine

    Piepo,
post your gmux and ID, rom versions: we might maybe converge towards the f/w - s/w versions that are more prone to freezing. I have newer ROM but same gmux as others and only one freeze during normal use.
    Cheers
