May 26, 2010 1:54 PM in response to Artitronby Appelflap,Ok great!
If every one that has OR does not have freeze problems can post the info the we can make a list, and maybe find a possible cause.
Please post your number of freeze's together with the info.
I had 0 freezes with my current macbook pro.
My 15" had at least 7 freezes and i am sure it was gMux Version 1.9.21 -
May 26, 2010 2:01 PM in response to Appelflapby califfo1975,FULLY AGREE. in spite of this, there are already some contradictions...
Artitron has same gmux and lower ROM than me, he had no freezes up to date whilst I had one....
ROM 3532 + gmux 1.9.21 seems to be the guilty / bad combination but fivelittlefish post seems to counter-respond to this assumption.
The sample is too small for the time being but let's try to have more information. POST YOUR DATA guys!!
These differences should be nevertheless addressable by FW update!!!!

3 FREEZES Before installing gfxcard status
1 FREEZE on gfx with Intel graphics.
Currently on NVIDIA (no switchin) - havent observed any freezes for 3 days -
May 26, 2010 2:26 PM in response to Dev Prasby mgcharlie,Dev Pras, are you suggesting gfxcardstatus may be a factor?
For people reporting that everything is fine: remember to run your macbooks on battery and report what gfx card were running at the moment of the freeze, or if automatically switch is enabled. -
May 26, 2010 2:26 PM in response to Artitronby jgmdean,Interesting. My 17" i7 matte screen was store bought at an Apple Store here in Texas, and I have:
Intel:
Device ID: 0x0046
Revision ID: 0x0012
gMux Version: 1.9.22
Nvidia
Device ID: 0x0a29
Revision ID: 0x00a2
ROM Revision: 3532
gMux Version: 1.9.22
I had two freezes a while ago followed by an unbootable drive (gray screen) that was fixed by a permissions & disk repair.
I'm guessing "gMux" is the Graphics Multiplexer, i.e. the part that does the actual switching. -
May 26, 2010 2:37 PM in response to mgcharlieby Dev Pras,I am not saying gfxcard status is a factor. i said that because i wanted ppl to know that i didnt know if it was using intel or nvidia during the freezes. I have all freezes while it was plugged in throughout.
What i have observed though is that There was VLC player running all 4 times. I dont know if it could be that reason - MY VLC has been crashing for a while now. two days ago - just deleted and installed a newer version - dont know why it hadnt updated ?? -
May 26, 2010 2:38 PM in response to Dev Prasby Dev Pras,** VLC player has been crashing ever since i turned off the dynamic switching! -
May 26, 2010 2:42 PM in response to Artitronby dliang,Here are the specs for mine which have the freezing issue at least once a day on normal usage:
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0a29

gMux Version: 1.9.22

Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

New Machine (No Issues Yet) have the same ROM and gMux versions though, been using it for two days now with moderate / heavy usage. -

May 26, 2010 4:03 PM in response to Dev Prasby mgcharlie,Dev Pras,
I was observing this pattern: unplugged macbook using discrete graphics.
You're telling me during the freeze of your macbook you were plugged in and gfx was reporting the use of integrated graphics.
This is completely oposite to the pattern I'm observing on this thread.
Could you confirm there is no spinning weel, pointer works and nothing else moves on screen during the freeze?
Thank you very much. -

May 26, 2010 4:50 PM in response to Appelflapby [Tee]derDoc[DMC],I got my 17" i7 MBP CTO about 2 weeks ago.
Had two freezes last week while running on cable ethernet and USB mouse connected, just normal programming work, nothing special. No entry in the syslog either.
Should have been running on nvidia, since I always have skype running in the bg which apparently causes a switch to nvidia. Since I found this thread I have downloaded gfxcardstatus and set it to intel-only, have had no issues since then, but haven't run with USB mouse and ethernet since.
Normally I run with Wifi and no USB connected, haven't had any freeze while doing that.
I have a 256SSD in case it matters. My specs are:

May 26, 2010 4:52 PM in response to mgcharlieby Dev Pras,i believe that the problem is in the switching as well. HENCE the 3 crashes might be during the switching because i did not have gfxcardstatus installed so i didnt know...after that i was on intel. and observed a similar freeze while i was on Intel and not dyanmic switiching on gfxcard status.
yes theres no spiinning wheel , cursor works for a while..and then doesnt move at all.. comes back up in 5-8 minutes -

just to clear things up, the issue I'm experiencing is exactly the same as OP's MBP before his replacement, which means:
- freezes at random;
- no gray screen;
- no screen artifacts. Things just freeze and stay as is;
- input freezes (keyboard, mouse and trackpad). No beachball;
- hard reboot required;
- mouse cursor doesn't move for a while before complete freezing. Everything hangs at once;
- system doesn't respond upon waiting. Hard reboot is non optional
- freezes even when plugged and with gpu switching disabled.
