Jun 2, 2010 9:32 PM in response to baselinerby mgcharlie, good news. there were three posts on page 8, 9 and 30 with users mentioning they were able to log via ssh. one of them reported that "Using 'top' I was able to see that 'kernel_task' was using over 100% of CPU, and meanwhile iPhoto was using over 1600%" (darren_, page 8).
at this point I´d like to be able to reproduce this issue just to ssh into the macbook and see whats going on. -
Jun 2, 2010 9:39 PM in response to baselinerby Petermgr,About 10 freezes in 5 minutes of playing a video. With numerous log lines as follows:
Jun 2 17:31:43 P-G-MacBook-Pro [0x0-0x13013].com.apple.iTunes[149]: Wed Jun 2 20:31:43 P-G-MacBook-Pro.local iTunes[149] <Error>: kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGSSetWindowCaptureExcludeShape: Failed
Just brought it back from the Service Center. They indicated no problem could be found. -

du9207,
the thread you have linked before describes a different issue.
there is no beach balls on the issue described on this thread.
on a side note, i´ve been running fine since I resetted SMC because of another issue (my macbook wouldn´t force shut down).

hey mgcharlie what's up,
I didn't post a link, I actually copy and pasted something that runiey ( i think that's right) has posted earlier. That's why below HIS quote I said "wrong". He posted a thread about the beach ball, I was just letting him know that his problem is wrong.
My computer freezes like the rest of the people on THIS thread -

Well, there is some hope for us. I can confirm that Apple Engineering is looking into this problem since I got a response back on the bug report I submitted a few days ago. They wanted to know if I could ssh into the machine and if any process was using up a significant amount of the CPU. I'm hopeful.
this is awesome!!!!!
I also signed up and submitted a bug report just because. There are too many of us with this problem for Apple to say that not many people are experiencing this and that it is isolated B.S.!!!!
Hopefully we hear something some
EVERYONE SHOULD SUBMIT A BUG REPORT OR ELSE WE WILL GET IGNORED
PLEASE BUG APPLE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SO THAT THEY WORK ON IT NOW!!!!!! -

du9207,
Open two instances of terminal. In each instance, copy/paste this code into each:
yes> /dev/null
Let that run in the background in those 2 terminal windows while attempting to do other tasks(surf internet, itunes, etc....). If it does NOT crash and/or graphically glitch the machine after 4-5 hours in this condition, it should be stable and trustworthy.
what exactly does this code do?????? -
Jun 3, 2010 1:08 AM in response to du9207by Duk242,The yes command repeats the letter y.
It's used sometimes when you've got an installer and you need to hit y to accept everything.
In this case, it generates CPU Load, so it makes your computer work harder.
The >/dev/null bit just makes it not output to the window. -
Jun 3, 2010 1:38 AM in response to Artitronby badkid,I had the same problems with my MBP 15" unibody, when i was running 10.6.3.
And found a basic solution after following a top to bottom approach to find what has happened.
It could help the users having problem with Coolbook or/and 10.6.3.
Processor - 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo
Graphics Card - 9400M and 9600M GT
OS - 10.6.3
Software - CoolBook
Main symptom was related to AC Power and Battery ...
- Was not booting up when on battery power, 'll freeze on the grey circle. ( Normal Mode )
- on disconnecting the AC Power when already running this would freeze again.
- Also on running coolbook controller it freezed.
- After reboot, and Disk repair it showed some 2 errors and said it need to be repaired.
Tried Solutions
- Running without the battery. ( Passed ) worked all good with no problems of freezing.
- Reset SMC, PRAM ( Passed ). but didn't solved the problem.
- Booting with battery on safe mode.( Passed ), worked good.
- Surface Scan ( Passed ) -Tried bcoz of risk of HD failure
- Memory Check ( Passed ) - Tried bcoz of risk of Memory failure
- Checked all cable connectors ( Passed ),Removed and Reinstalled RAM chips, wrt google resources. due to the risk of loose connectors.
- Coolbook Uninstalled, Safe Mode with App Cleaner ( Passed ) - Or it'll freeze again.
- Finally decided to go back to 10.6 - Reinstall ( Passed )
Now running same Coolbook on 10.6.2 Everything works fine.
Resources
- Google
Lets live on 10.6.2 till apple fixes this. -
Jun 3, 2010 1:54 AM in response to du9207by reqgrider,As far as I can tell, this issue affects every MBP 2010 out there. I know only 2 other people who bought different 15" in different countries in Europe. And they have the same problem, just more rarely. I find it hard to believe Apple have any trouble reproducing the problem, especially as we know that they received at least one faulty laptop by now. -

No, it doesn't.
I've posted in this thread several times. I currently have no issues at all (touches wood) on my 15" -

This advice is useless to Macbook Pro 2010 owners (see thread title). The 2010 MBP's come pre-installed with OSX 10.6.3. How would you propose that we go back to 10.6.2 ? -
Jun 3, 2010 3:38 AM in response to Artitronby Enrico Buttignol,I have many hang problems with my new MacBook Pro 2010 i7 17".
The problems appear on OSX and Windows 7, less in OSX due to the graphic switch.
On Windows 7 the system hang when it reach an high temperature. If the system maintain a low temperature it does not hang.
I think the problem can be solved by Apple with a Firmware update that change the thermal profile and the fan speed.

Jun 3, 2010 4:28 AM in response to du9207by mgcharlie,ok, my apologies. I went back to see iRuney´s post. He´s definitly describing another issue. Not only him. Some other people on this thread are also describing another issue.
It´s been about a week without freezes. But I´ll still setup ssh too, if get a freeze.
thanks -
Jun 3, 2010 6:57 AM in response to mgcharlieby kmac1036,my UB 15" is doing the same thing, keeps hanging with the beachball to the poitn you can't use the machine. I was running the 500GB 7200rpm seagate, pulled it out & put into my OWC external case. it runs fine just by doing that, noticed the issues after installing 10.6.3 combo update. wiped the drive, reloaded up to 10.6.3 & same thing. I'm not running coolbook. -

Not the same problem as indicated by the thread starter. This is a hard freeze (no beach ball) issue on 2010 Macbook Pros. Read the first post in the thread. -
Jun 3, 2010 8:57 AM in response to GizmosTailby badkid,I'm not sure but still they 'll be giving away the installation DVD's with new Mac's.
in case if not, i'll go with the geeky way using all possible resources on internet.
We can waste our time to watch youtube n download videos from there, n like that we can also waste some of our time to fix our loving Mac's.
May be this can't help everyone, but for the one's who want to fix it, this can help them.
in the last 18 months i've never visited any apple care or some technician ( its almost 300 miles from my place the nearest support in india ) regarding any software or minor hardware problem like noisy fans and superdrive, time to time internal cleaning n all minor stuff, i fixed them on my own.
So other ppl can do it also.
that just an advice.
if you think its inappropriate in here, i'll remove my post.
