Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

you should be able to get 10.6.* on there no problem

apple set the computers up so that you can't install an earlier OS than what they are sold with, though this is only from DISC!
you can however take an image from another computer and then do a restore using disk utility to your macbook.
i do this all the time.
in fact you could probably find you could load 10.5 on those machines but driver issues may prohibit, not sure!

so install 10.6 on an external drive and use that as source on Macbook pro

problem is you need a 10.6 disk and an earlier mac - let us know how this goes

Good thought, although chances are that 99% of the users of 2010 MBPs might not have either.

    Hello,

I have the same problem : more 20 freezes by day ... It's unuseable !
No process cause this problem, CPU activity is normal (<2%). Every hardware stuf seems to be ok.

If Mac OS versions or firmware seems to solve the problem, please Apple guys, tried to find this issue ! If we can avoid to change of Mac, it will be good

    Thank you all.
    Matt

yeah, I had hard freezes too. kinda like when 10.6 came out... looks like it's an issue again with the chipset drivers to me...

For everyone that's really suffering with this, it appears that installing gfxCardStatus can at least circumvent the issue by always using the Intel chip. Of course, that means you're not using the power of the NVidia chip, but at least it stops the freezes.

I've had it installed for 3-4 days now, and have had no freezes since.

I have been trying the same, but I can't get external monitor to work forced to Intel. I assume that is normal...

Well I've been getting the freezes on the old MBP i7, so whilst I had the time today I phoned Apple Care to put it all too them. Ran through the various resets and removed the various startup items (as I'm guessing you've all been there and got the t-shirt for) and just as the guy was saying "Right Andy, well that's about all we can do for now and you'll have to see how it goes" (which I guess was going to finish with if it keeps happening call us back) the MBP froze, at the Login Screen (well I say froze, the spinning wheel came on and it took a good minute from clicking on my name to getting my password box come up).

So I explained this and I'm booked into the Old Genius Bar on Saturday to see what they make of it all, so been out and bought a new external to Time Machine my setup onto before then!

I'll keep you posted on how things go, but it's good to know that I'm not the only one it's happening too. It's almost as if they've released a machine that is too fast for it's own Hardware / Software! lol ..

but are you sure that pre-10.6.3 might be installed on latest MBP 2010? I am noyt, as pre-10.6.3 should not contain any driver for our HW, should it?
    Cheers

I guess I can join the club. Bought a new 15" MBP two weeks ago and it has been consistently freezing nearly every session. No discernible pattern; it locks up at odd times:

    Running Screensaver
    Opening Keynote
    Copying files

I have to assume that it will lock up and that I will need to do a hard shutdown during every critical operation, so I am backing up every five minutes. Obviously this is not sustainable.

Judging by the widespread nature of this problem, I would think Apple would make it a priority. They simply cannot afford to let their legendary reputation for reliability slip: it will kill the fantastic run they are having.

I am not sure what this means, but I used my new MBP all day today and experienced two complete freezes. Both occurred while minimizing programs. The "genie" minimizing effect was frozen on the screen in both instances. Could this possibly be pointing to a graphics card problem like was mentioned previously?

I just got my MBP 10 days ago. It's my first mac, and I was really happy with it. Yesterday, while watching a movie on full screen using DVD player, the computer just froze, but the sound still played in the backround. The mouse and keyboard didn't respond to any command, only the power switch which I used to turn it off. I started it again and it's been working fine.

The computer was also running: Safari, Texshop, Matlab, Skype, Dropbox, Gnotifiers, Caffeine... So I thought it was maybe normal, that too many apps at the time could overload it or something (used to have a windows machine before :s).
    My serial starts with W802.

I hope it can be solved by updating the OS soon. I would not like to give back such a good and awaited machine now....

Having the same issue. MacBook Pro 15" i7 8GB RAM. Got it about a month ago and has so far frozen twice while watching movies. Picture freezes, sound continues, mouse and keyboard input does not work. Have to hold power button to reboot. Then I have to boot from the install DVD and run repair disk as the disk has become corrupted (both times the MBP froze).

    Also have this issue:
