Jun 5, 2010 6:13 PM in response to Artitronby jgmdean,MBP 17"8GB RAM matte screen, 256GB Patriot Warpv3 SDD.
Just hard froze. MBP was locked to Intel GPU by gfxStatus 1.75 and was in a lightweight OpenGL screensaver: Spirex on AC power. Required hard power off.
The generated report (submitted) is below. Look at the Backtrace:com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHDGraphics(6.1.0)
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6)
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.1)
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.1)
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer
I don't think the Nvidia was to blame for this one!
Since other people have been using the Nvidia when they experienced the freeze I postulate the bug must be higher up the dependency stack.
I'm also going to go with a software bug that is exacerbated by any hardware flaw in either GPU or the chipset, or even the CPU. I'm thinking the same class of hardware flaw as bedeviled the previous GPU which triggers the bug with greater frequency depending on the severity of the flaw. Note that these kind of flaws are usually temperature sensitive, i.e. the warmer, the greater the chance of the flaw manifesting. Remember chip manufacture is a statistical yield process and each chip is tested to see which "bin" of performance specifications it fits into, basically crank it until it fails and grade it.
This would explain why some systems are more "susceptible" to the same bug. No way of telling from the outside if this is a manufacturing process or design issue though.

Anyway;
I have not experienced ANY of the issues mentioned in this forum on my i7 MBP, however in this forum the main MBP's freezing are 17", however mine is a 15".
I wouldn't be Totally discouraged getting in an MBP.
Like you said not all issues are reported, likewise hardly any success stories are mentioned either.
Like you i scanned forums, review's, etc.
Cheer's

Jun 6, 2010 7:45 AM in response to Artitronby Watcher_as,I have had my Macbook Pro i5 model for less than two weeks and yesterday suddenly froze and nothing happens and the symptoms are exact the same that you already described. Today, when I was watching a video it did it again. I know that this forum it's for i7 but I mention that because it happens also to my i5.

Jun 6, 2010 8:42 AM in response to Artitronby Engenhart,Hello everybody, I experienced the freeze as well (on a new MacBookPro i7, 2,66, 500GB). I migrated a 10.6.3 System from a older 15" MBP. My specialists at my Apple-PArtner can´t solve the problem twice, they exchanged the first i7/17" and I got a brandnew model, started migration again and it also »freeze« s.
My Apple-Partner has no solution to this and told me to cash back. This is unexeptable: So I contacted APPLE directly via Support. Now I am in contact to the european HQ in Ireland and they didn´t know about this problem. So I told them. We start testing on Monday.
I will keep you all updated if we can solve something. -
Jun 6, 2010 11:19 AM in response to Artitronby Artitron,I am approaching the 2 week mark with the new hardware from Apple and haven't experienced a single freeze since switching out the machine having freezes for a new one of the same specs under roughly the same usage pattern.
In the last few days, I have even installed BootCamp and VMWare Fusion 3.1 with Windows 7 with no additional issues to report.
I hope this trend continues. -
Jun 6, 2010 2:33 PM in response to Artitronby djanthonyw,Ok, so I've shut down and restarted my MBP 2.4 i5 numerous times without the external display plugged in and it has not froze once at the logon screen, this only happens when I boot my MBP with the external display plugged in. What I don't understand is that this only happens on boot, if I login and then plug the external display in, it works fine without freezing at all. -
Jun 6, 2010 3:42 PM in response to SoVeryAPTby SoVeryAPT,So, an update from me..
I took my MBP i7 into the local Genius Bar yesterday and my MBP will be spending a few days in Apple Hospital, hopefully coming back fixed and sorted.
The guy on the bar was quite surprised at how much it froze as (thankfully I guess) it did it as soon as he powered it on and then again shortly after.
Anyway, he's looking at the Hard Drive, Memory and LogicBoard first off and suggests the freezes aren't anything to do with the graphics card, but we'll see where it goes and where it comes back from.
For the mean time, I'm back on my MB 13" c2007, which you'd think stepping back from an i7 to this would be dreadful but actually, because of the freezes, this seems to run faster! lol .. go figure!
I hope it gets sorted and I'll post back when I find out more. In the meantime, I'd recommend those who are having the same issue contact Apple Care first off, run through their various things (PRAM resets, Verify Disk etc) and then book it into the Genius Bar and see about getting it sorted. If enough people have the problem then I'm sure Apple will be more likely to do something about it, but whilst we all sit waiting and hoping it will go away, they won't as they don't have to spend anything! -
Jun 6, 2010 6:05 PM in response to djanthonywby djanthonyw,My freeze is still happening even if I enable automatic login into my user account. Input stays frozen for about 10 minutes and only when I have an external display connected on boot.
I'm not encountering any freezes if I restart in clamshell mode, or if I boot without an external display. -
Jun 7, 2010 1:40 AM in response to Artitronby Karim Zaki,Guys..
I'm interested to know if anyone is still having the freeze after installing gfxCardStatus and managing the switching of graphics cards manually.
I've been doing this for a week or so now, and have experienced no freezes since then. -
Jun 7, 2010 2:11 AM in response to Karim Zakiby SoVeryAPT,I ran the latest version of gfxCardStatus on my MBP i7 and ran it in the various modes and still got the freeze errors, so I figured I'd leave it running but on Auto Switching and see if I noticed any changes when it did switch, and to be honest, it tended to freeze when it wasn't switching between the 2 cards, and it was freezing running on both the nVidia and the Intel chip. -
Jun 7, 2010 2:32 AM in response to Janus Andersenby Espen Vestre,Good idea about the graphic switching.
Today I had my first freeze ever with my i7, which I've had for more than a month. It continued runninig backup etc., and I could log into it via ssh from my linux workstation. top showed that kernel_task was consuming 100% cpu, but otherwise the machine was doing fine, and it responded to a "sudo reboot", so I could restart without using the power button. -
Jun 7, 2010 6:19 AM in response to Artitronby Cyril Carrez,Here's what I did, with no luck:
- resinstalled 10.6.3 (reformated the full disk). Didn't bothered with the Applications DVD.
- ran the SW updates.
- unchecked the auto-switching so the laptop uses NVIDIA (but I'm not sure anymore that triggers the freeze)
- got a copy of TechTool Pro from a friend, and I ran it twice:
-- first time the screensaver was on, and the machine freezed(after maybe 1h1/2)
-- second time with disabled screensaver: all is OK (video, memory, surface scan, etc...)
And I'm still experiencing some freezing. Sometimes rebooting after a freeze gives me a black screen.
What I have is the LEAST software you can have on the machine, and it still freezes.
(I already posted the SN in this forum)

Jun 7, 2010 11:25 AM in response to Karim Zakiby short2347,I can copy that on a MBP2010 2.66ghz i7 with SSD and 10.6.3 and external Display and Keyboard/Mouse set. After I switched to Nvidia Only on gfxCardStatus v.1.7 I haven't had a single freeze in the last 8 days uptime.
Seems like the way to go unless you don't need the Intel Graphics (I am mostly running on power, so I don't care about the Intel Graphic card).
Good luck! -
