Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I would have to agree. I was just going to suggest the same thing. My computer, with VMWare running would freeze with a bunch of lines going across both monitors...I have a new MBP 17" i5. Mouse would work but I couldn't do anything. Hard reset. Also my computer wouldn't wake from sleep, I had to do a hard reset here too. My 2007 MBP model never experienced this problem with the same software installed.

So far after I have turned off automatic video card switching, my freezing problem has stopped. I haven't been able to test wake from sleep yet, but will be able to later today as I had turned it off because of the freezing.

I figured this being one of the bigger/newer features there would be some bugs to work out. I am sure we will be seeing a firmware update or something...at least the previous years of new laptops would confirm that.

I see all these reports of issues on the forum, has everybody with issues reported them to apple, I see there are many new people a day saying they have issue, if everyone reports it and keeps complaining directly to apple care it can only make things better, it is a pain in the but, the more we poke at them ...

I have the same issue. Initially, I assumed it was just me doing something wrong, but it continued. Last week, it froze again but this time the screen started to become corrupted. The longer I waited the more the screen got worse. iTunes was still playing, the volume buttons still worked but the machine was unresponsive. Could not get the Force Quite window to come up. Called Apple Care, they sent me to an apple store. The Apple Genius told me to call Apple Care and have them replace the MBP since it is fairly new. Now waiting on my new MBP. Have my fingers crossed.

Trust me, Apple is reading this thread. They deleted a few of my posts because I mentioned a beta release.

One more piece of information: The machine might, despite the 8GB of memory, have been slightly short on memory (but not out of VM) when this happened. I was running Windows 7 in VMware plus several additional apps. My first suspect actually was VMware, since I recently upgraded it to version 3.1.

It's SAD that Apple made a pretty big mistake like this. So sad.
This have been my first MBP. And probably it's going to be the last, cause I'm gonna think for a iMac or a Mini, cause for developing, it's pretty enough.

I don't understand why you jump to such grave conclusions after ONE such incident. I had one yesterday, and it was the first real problem ever with my i7 MBP, it's a wonderful machine after all (I use my machine for development too, both for Mac, Windows and Linux).

Hopefully Apple is already addressing this, and it sounds like from a couple of posts, they might be. I wanted to contribute my findings, as well as ask those of you who have already chimed in to confirm if you're seeing these specific symptoms. I realize the OP and many of you responding are using Core i7 machines, but I believe, like some of the add'l responses that it applies to both i5 and i7 machines (...and possibly C2D 13" machines, too, right?).

First, many of you have noticed that if you leave the machine alone for "about 10 minutes", it will resume operating as if it had never stopped. Can you be any more specific regarding time? I've had this occur about 7 times now (got the machine on about 4/16 or so)...twice earlier tonight. I run my clock in the menubar w/ seconds showing, so I can see exactly when the freeze occurs and write it down. Both times tonight, it has taken right at 8 minutes, 42 seconds to return control to me.

Can you do the same and see if the elapsed time is the same? For those of you who are doing a hard shutdown, can you turn on seconds display on the clock and wait at least 9 minutes after the time shown to see if it recomposes itself?

Also, other symptoms and things I've noticed:

    1. Definitely NO spinning beachball
    2. Despite the UI completely refusing to update, sound continues to play
    3. I haven't had a chance to try SSH yet (just turned it on), but I AM able to ping the machine from another on the network
    4. Screen will dim (not go black, just dim) as usual for energy savings, and moving the mouse will return it to full brightness
    5. Nothing useful in the Console corresponding to the time of the hang-up
    6. Happens on power adapter, perhaps on battery as well (OP says battery, I believe)

Does that jive w/ what most of you are seeing?

It seems to me that the machine might not actually hung up at all, but that the UI is completely frozen, allowing no further input and showing no updates until the glitch passes. I remember seeing similar behavior on some Dual 1.8GHz G5s that a client bought many years ago-- the system would still be functioning, but the UI was history. Difference in that case was that the UI never came back...but you could SSH in, though.

Well, I'm lucky and have only experienced this once... but when I did, I rebooted it about 9:50 minutes after this happened, so I don't think anything woke up before that. But I may also have turned things worse in the meantime, trying to kill random processes to see if it helped. Interestingly, Safari didn't die properly when I tried to kill it, it turned into "(Safari)". Not sure if that means that it's a zombie? kernel_task just kept on using 100% cpu. I was browsing in Safari, so I suspect the glitch may be Safari-related (via Webkit and graphics driver). I'd recommend everyone to upgrade to 5.0 and see if it helps, it's a nice upgrade anyway.

Does that jive w/ what most of you are seeing?

    Yes.

I assume you mean that you had connected via SSH and were attempting to kill processes this way?

Yes. That's also why I know that the system was otherwise quite well-behaving, and that kernel_task was consuming 100% cpu. I had no problems killing other processes (without -9), but Safari wasn't completely killed (even with -9).

Last night before I booted up my MBP I disconnected my external monitor and still got a freeze at the login screen... I guess that rules out the external monitor as an issue.

One thing I've thought of is even though I've disabled automatic graphics switching, before login I'm guessing that Intel is still active, so the freeze could still be happening due to Intel, or switching from Intel to Nvidia.

I'll state again that in the month I've had my 2.4 Ghz i5 I haven't experienced a freeze while being logged in with any kind of usage from light to heavy. I only experience freezes of not being able to input anything at the login window or login if automatic login is on.

Hmm. So now my system won't auto sleep even though the timer is set for 1.5 hours. I left the machine alone all night and it didn't sleep.

Seems to be some issues. I have a appt to call in to Applecare. Will see if I glean anything.

This is unbeliveble. macbook pro 13" app. 2 times each hour todaj freezes. fresn installation last night. This is becoming unsane. How that law allows them to sell garbage? If I calculated all my time spent solving this ****** crap I woul earn already for new BMW. And their care for customers in our cantry is under all accepted levels. Even farmers from high mountains serve their customers better. I swear this is the last peace of **** I bought from Apple.

In my conversation with a senior level support or engineer person via Applecare, we ran hardware tests, both simple and complex. No errors found. I told them that I understand Apple can be on the cutting edge or provide new features that may not be 100% flushed out, that usually get fixed with a firmware/software update. So please don't make me bring in my machine if this is the case...I can't waste my time. Even though they didn't say directly that there is a software update coming, they did tell me that since no errors were found in the hardware test it must be a driver or software issue and that an update should fix it. When, what, where I do not know.

To reiterate, turning off auto graphic switching has stopped my machine from freezing, though I never waited to see if it would "come back" before doing hard reset. I only had mouse functions though couldn't click on anything or force quit anything. Plus both displays had various short lines dancing all around them. Sometimes when waking from screen saver or display sleep, my second monitor is nothing but snow and I have to turn off the monitor and back on again to get the screen back. Definitely seems to point to graphics drivers in my humble opinion.

Odd thing is that my machine won't auto sleep anymore since turning off auto graphic switching. I did the hold shift, control, option key and hit power button earlier today to see if that would resolve that issue.
