Q: MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

I believe that is the airport driver...

    Do the next:

    1-Start the computer
    2-Fast deactivate the airport
    3-Connect with ethernet

And the frezzes stops in all MacBook Pro 13''

No, I do not think so, because both my freezes have happened when I was connected to ethernet.
Anyway, since I installed gfxCardStatus and am running on Intel-only: no more freezes, which seems to be the consensus here in this thread, so its definitely something to do with either card, the driver or the switching itself.

I also got this freezing problem quite often since I bought the machine in the week this new models were released. I have the i5 version of the MacBook Pro.

Just throwing in to say that I'm also experiencing the same issue (freezing solid with no input), and I'm also running a 15in i7. Doesn't happen TOO often, but when it does it's maddening, as it seems to happen without an identifiable cause. Next time I see it, I'll wait the 15-20 minutes to see if things come back, as others have seen.

Has anybody here successfully "cured" their machine yet? While my freezes seemed random and I was never able to reproduce them at will during the first few weeks of ownership, I have to admit I haven't experienced anything like it again in the past couple weeks (with no change in usage patterns).

I'm sure of this, because ever since I learned one could "wait it out," I've been wanting to try it... but haven't had the chance yet.

(Probably jinxing myself just by mentioning it).

Quick update: I posted earlier about removing a couple of kext files (speedit and BRESINKx86Monitoring). I'm at four days without a freeze. I'd like to say it's fixed, but the incidence of the hang was so low that it's impossible to say for sure. I'll add that I'm almost always running with an attached monitor, so I believe that my freezes have all been w/ the nVidia graphics active.

Just an update for everyone- I experienced the same exact freeze problem with my 15" i7. Worked with Apple support and they sent me a replacement machine last week. Reloaded everything from scratch onto the new laptop...and it is still locking up multiple times a day. Same problem with the replacement laptop. So frustrating...

It's not heat related (has happened both cold & warm); and it's not battery related (has happened both on power & on battery). I still think it's a graphics card issue - it's always as a Window is opening - and the window freezes 1/2 way.

I noticed that I was changing virtual desktops when my MBP froze.

That is not good news. I am waiting for my replacement 15" because of freezing problems. If I experience the same problems on the new Mac I hope Apple offers a full refund. Already wasted too much time in my first venture as a Mac owner.

The fact of the matter is, there are machines out there that do not have any of these problems. My replacement machine does not have any problems. Of course, it is always possible that the machine you get does. Hard to explain, the whole thing is mind boggling.

    4. Screen will dim (not go black, just dim) as usual for energy savings, and moving the mouse will return it to full brightness
    5. Nothing useful in the Console corresponding to the time of the hang-up
    6. Happens on power adapter, perhaps on battery as well (OP says battery, I believe)

VERY typical of WindowServer. Check windowserver.log for anything weird..

I have to report that haven't had any freeze since I updated the driver version my Nvidia GT330M to 8.17.11.9716 (on the W7 bootcamp)

Still have the attention note about USB host controlles 3b3b & 3b..

Note: I had previously experienced a couple per day using Windows7.
Not had any freeze on MAC OS yet.... but I barely use it, since I use the MBP at work with MS CRM & Outlook. I use MACOS for videos, photoshop & web at night sometimes.
