Don't jump to conclusions, this may very well be an easy-to-fix driver problem. This is a machine with a new motherboard and a fancy graphics driver, I'm not surprised at all if the first generation of its drivers has a few problems.
I understand that with one crash I've been lucky so far compared to others here, but I'd like to add that I'm tremendously happy with my i7 MacBook Pro, and that it's had far less initial problems than both my previous MBPs (Late 2006 C2D and first-generation unibody). And both these machines work flawlessly today, their initial problems have all been fixed by firmware and software upgrades. -
Jun 9, 2010 1:48 PM in response to Espen Vestreby Dembo,Just to reiterate: So far my i5/2.4GHz did not experience a single hang-up. I still haven't installed the MacbookPro 1.3 Update and I strongly suspect that the issue is connected to the 1.3 update. -

What makes you think so? I don't think that update is even applicable to these 2010 MacBook Pros. -
Jun 9, 2010 2:21 PM in response to Artitronby Terry Mahoney,My new, 2-week-old 15" aluminum unibody i7 MBP's cursor and keyboard froze immediately after boot and login, while on-the-road and connected to a friend's home, D-Link router based, password-protected wireless network - they run a Windows-7 based network; I forced power-off by holding power-button down - the problem did not recur on reboot; no problems (yet) using my own, home Airport-based network. No external peripherals attached to MBP when freeze occurred.
My 3-month old, 27" iMac core i7 has never (yet) had freeze problems but it's hardwired to my Airport Extreme. Both systems fully up to date with 10.6.3. -
Jun 9, 2010 4:39 PM in response to Terry Mahoneyby Allen Kennedy,Add me to the list..
Im on week 1 of the new 15" i7 and it has froze a couple of time so far.
This thing does get blazing hot. Peaked out at 95 a couple of times doing videos and imports.
I had to force shutdown twice.
I was getting ready to reinstall os and all apps but after seeing this is on page 38 im thinking its not going to help..
I did import all my files from a 13" 250gb. So i dont know if i pulled over something bad..
Im still probably going to flush the whole system tonight.. Ill update everyone after the reinstall.
P.s has happend on two different hdd's first 5400 drive and then cloned 7200 drive. -
Jun 9, 2010 7:44 PM in response to Allen Kennedyby GoTVols,If one is trying to rule out a software issue, why would one use a cloned drive and risk bringing the problem to your new drive? -
Jun 10, 2010 12:12 AM in response to Artitronby BenEaton,I was seeing this quite often, mainly when browsing in safari and selecting a newly opened tab with some sort of flash content on it. Ever since i installed gfxCardStatus and subsequently stopped using dynamic switching this problem has disappeared. If i turn dynamic switching back on, the problem comes back.
I just change it manually as required now, with intel being sufficient for a surprising amount of the time. Its a quite nice boost in battery life as well! -

I don't think you should worry about that, supposedly the i7 is built to run at up to 100 C. I tried running 4 simultanous looping processes right now (i.e. consuming 100% of each cpu core), and the temperature reached 95 C before the fans even started raising above 2000 rpm. At 99 C they started speeding up above 3000 rpm (and the temperature quickly dropped to 95 C again), and now they run at appr. 5800 rpm with the CPU at 87 C. -

Hmm. Maybe I've only seen this once because I use ClickToFlash. The single time I saw it I had indeed a newly loaded or probably still loading window in Safari. I also had VMware running in the background, this may have triggered that the nVidia card was in use (and I then think it was already in use and not being switched to at the hang time!).
Has anyone here upgraded to Safari 5 and experienced any improvement? -
Jun 10, 2010 1:22 AM in response to Espen Vestreby lumpbelly,Looking to buy but . . .
I bought my imac in '06 sold on promises of ease of use and stability. I like my Mac but IMHO are no more stable than Windows - 'Force Quit' is used several times a week.
Apple's silence on this issue is deafening.
I have my heart set on a 15" IV but this issue seems unacceptable so my head says no (for now!) -
Jun 10, 2010 10:34 AM in response to lumpbellyby theapex,Regarding the heat issues .. i've never had a Macbook Pro before this past one I returned (due to these random freezings) but I do recall it verging on "unacceptably" hot on my lap. Granted, it could simply be the giant heat-sink that is the unibody itself simply dissipating the heat .. which is what I assumed .. but again, I don't have previous experience with MBP's.
As a side note, I don't recall the fan ever turning on as it was always dead silent. So while it was noticeably hot on the lap, in the end, I guess it was okay since it was spread out over a large portion of the bottom plate.
Cheers and I'm looking forward to hearing of a solution on here ... soon! Otherwise, I love the new MBP. -
Jun 10, 2010 11:11 AM in response to Artitronby Loft203,I have had my MacBook Pro 15 inch with the i7 and it just started this week freezing up. Happening now once a day.
I bought it over a month ago now, so unsure what just happened to make it freeze up like this. But I has been pretty consistent in doing it while running the new Safari. Anyone else have this issue?
It just freezes and the mouse arrow just stops moving. No way to force quit or anything. Have to do a hard restart every time.
Very frustrating. Will be hard to get it to happen in front of the folks at the Genius Bar.
Any helpful advice out there?

Received my MBP i7, HR Matte Display, 7200RPM 500GB on may 25th.
So far including 30 min ago, i have had 3 freeze ups. Today all i did was responding to a Facebook thread, BAM! and everything stops. All I can do to end it, is to hit the big button and kill the system.
This is not good, im a photographer and i bought an expensive Notebook capable of doing big tasks, 3D games and with matte display for photoediting as my main. Luckily i have not yet been doing any editing when this occurs, but if i was in the middle of a huge editing, that would all have been wiped!
Im contacting Apple tomorrow. This has to be resolved asap or im affraid i have to let the purchase go back and look for another "windows" solution.. sigh -

Have you tried waiting 9 minutes like I suggested above? If you just kill it w/o waiting to see if it returns in that timeframe, you're not helping to verify if the behavior is exactly the same.

Jun 10, 2010 2:32 PM in response to Fred Turnerby Nexcin,I dont think I got that "9 minute" thingy?.. Whats that all about and why should i wait 9 minutes?
I dont buy a product in this pricerange so i can sit and watch in for 9 minutes, ill ship it back to Apple in 9 minutes if anything.
