Jun 11, 2010 11:44 AM in response to Artitronby djanthonyw,As mentioned before, the only time I've experienced freezes were at logon and they last for about 10 minutes. Mouse pointer could still be moved, but could not input anything.
I'm not sure if this post will get deleted, but since I've installed the latest beta there hasn't been anymore freezing at logon for me. -
Jun 11, 2010 11:48 AM in response to Artitronby Artitron,Since I started this thread, I should provide some background to those just joining and help clarify the topic.
+ On April 21st, I ordered the following:
MBP 15.4/2.66/CTO, 2.66GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRM - 2x4GB, 512GB Solid State Drive, SuperDrive 8X DL, MBP 15"HR Antiglare WS Display
+ The unit was dispatched from Shanghai the same day and received in Seattle on 04/23/2010.
+ On May 3rd, I posted to the Apple forums after having seeing the issue twice since receiving the machine.
*There are no steps-to-reproduce the freeze, but a couple of the last times it happened I remember what I was doing:*
+ On May 10th, from home, I was actively checking Facebook when the trackpad stopped responding as I was using it. Mail and Firefox were likely the only apps open. The machine was not hot and had only been reactivated from sleep about 2 minutes before.
+ On May 12th, while in class, I was returning attention to my laptop after a few minutes when I couldn't "find" my pointer (i.e. it didn't move when I touched the trackpad) Looked at the time on the status bar, then looked at the time on my phone. It had been frozen for something like 5-7 minutes. The machine was warm, but not hot to the touch. I waited until it had been frozen 30 minutes to see if it would come back - it didn't. Mail, Firefox, and Eclipse were the only apps that were open. Class ended and I closed the lid (it did not sleep) and went directly to the University Village Apple Store. I popped it out for the Genius and he noted that it had been frozen for over 45 minutes based on the clock time. He restarted it and attempted to do diagnostics on it. He didn't find anything, didn't really ask me any questions, and noted the lack of logging by pointing out that the only thing in the logs was the keycode from him cycling the power. They could not replace the machine directly since it was CTO, so they graciously offered (via manager consent) to order a replacement and call me to come pick it up.
+ On May 18th, the Apple Store called that they had a new machine for me and I went to pick up the replacement. I handed over my "old" machine (it was less than a month out of the factory) and they brought out a new boxed MBP with the same specs. It was missing iWork, which had been in my original order, so they brought it into the back room and installed it for me. I asked the hardware admin employee if they were getting a lot of returns for this issue and he said no. The same day, I replaced all of my applications that had been on the previous MBP.
+ On June 4th, I split the partition via BootCamp and installed a freshly purchased copy of Windows 7 Professional.
Since replacing the machine and using it pretty much the same as the previous: I have not seen the issue on the replacement MBP.
To be clear, when the issue occurs, the common elements are:
+ There is no input (Trackpad, keyboard, and function keys do not work)
+ There are no UI updates (Clock doesn't continue to increment, no beachball, etc.)
+ There is no Grey Screen of Death
From my personal experience:
+ The system does not return to normal operation in a few minutes and needs to be power cycled.
+ There was no excessive heat (In at least two of the incidents, I believe it was still, in fact, cold)
+ I could not verify the sound was still playing since I did not have it freeze during audio playback.
+ There was no graphical corruption prior to or during the freeze.
+ I could not confirm that staying on AC power prevents freezing. All the times I have experience freezing, it was on Battery power.
+ I rarely ever power down the machine. I just put it to sleep and reopen it when I next need it.
There are enough variations in the hardware, but I wonder if it actually has something to do with the HR or AntiGlare displays? Just looking for something in common. But then again, I would rather not speculate and let Apple resolve the issue. -
Jun 11, 2010 3:46 PM in response to Artitronby Mattlaw,Is it just me, or does it seem like (based on the posts) this problem affects more of the i7 processors than the i5?
(I know this isn't helpful, but I have not experienced this problem, and I've had this i5 for a month.) -
Jun 11, 2010 11:51 PM in response to djanthonywby djanthonyw,Alright, I spoke too soon, it just happened on start up right now but at least it seems less frequent and only happens at logon. -
Jun 11, 2010 11:59 PM in response to djanthonywby du9207,oh no
this is not good
if you installed the latest beta and you are still getting the freeze then that could mean apple is not aware of this and they might not solve the problem before the new update is released.
i seriously hope that apple fixes this and does the right thing. Too many people here have spent over $1,500 on their machines and should not be going through this.
i'll never believe the Macs "just work"
yeah it's just this problem but look at the forums and you will see many people here with other problems. -

the problem is way more common on the i5/i7 systems. i have the core2duo but i still have the same problem. Some others also have the same core2duo with the same problem but not has many -
Jun 12, 2010 1:46 AM in response to Artitronby keeeet,**** I thought the problem might have gone, but it just froze again. This is the second time only over a 6 week period. The last time was 4 weeks ago. I was just loading a page on Safari, BBC iPlayer, with only Chrome the only other app open. I am fixed on nvidia graphics with gfxcard status since always plugged in to power so don't put it on switching mode. The last post on the console log is the following. Is it anything to do with it
12/06/2010 18:15 kernel SMS::IC ERROR: callPlatformFunction failed, retval = 0xe00002c7
which is the same 20 messages after it unfroze at 18:23, eight minutes later. This time the trackpad moved the mouse pointer the whole period, but last time the mouse didn't move.
I suppose the good thing is 2 freezes in 6 weeks. Whereas my Windows work PC has application- hangs about 5 times every day - normally Outlook and PPT - so its good to keep thinks in perspective. But then my work pc is a heap of junk that I don't pay for, and I shelled out several grand for this new mac which should work properly. -
Jun 12, 2010 3:32 AM in response to keeeetby GizmosTail, keeeet, are you running Emerald viewer? Google revealed your exact crash for some folks running Emerald viewer.

Jun 12, 2010 5:24 AM in response to Artitronby LTG Mac,Hey there Mac users!
I've bought my Macbook pro 15 inch about three weeks ago and like many others, I've been experiencing the hard FREEZE!!!
This is quite surprising!!!! I thought that apple's products are built to satisfy customers.
Have anyone had this problem solved? If so, please explain the process.

Jun 12, 2010 5:39 AM in response to Artitronby theapex,I don't know if this helps but it's worth trying. Set the hot corners to turn the screen saver on when you move the mouse to a corner of the screen. The next time it freezes, drag the "frozen" mouse to a corner and see if that jolts the screen back to an unfrozen state by forcing the screensaver.
As in my first post in this thread, I experienced weird graphical glitches (seemingly unloaded web pages and whited out full screen video) which I could only exit/fix by enabling the screen saver with the hot corner feature and then disabling it to get back.
While mine was frozen solid for 40 minutes, this MAY quite possibly work for those experiencing the "9 minute unfreezing".
~
Having said this, I KNOW it may not work seeing as the whole system is usually unresponsive (including the caps lock key LED) ... but it's worth a shot.
Just an idea.
Cheers! -
Jun 12, 2010 7:20 AM in response to Artitronby bob0322,I have the identical system as yours and the identical problem. My older macbook pro core 2 duo is running the same applications without freezing, so I conclude it is hardware. This happens mostly during the night and when I go to use the computer in the morning, find that it is frozen. But I can access it via apple remote desktop and it works just fine.
I suspect it is a logic board interface flaw, and based on the number of graphics chip exceptions, that it is linked to the graphics hardware. But that is pure speculation. -
Jun 12, 2010 10:02 AM in response to du9207by Mattlaw,I actually meant that I think it's more common on the i7 even versus the i5. -
Jun 12, 2010 10:08 AM in response to Artitronby Fred Turner,Well, it was only a matter of time. Just now had about my 7th or 8th freeze (bought about 4/16). Audio (from the Le Mans stream!) continued, but the UI completely hung up. Was able to SSH in from another machine, but before I could do much of anything via SSH, the 9m19s freeze ended. This is right in line w/ my other experiences-- about 9 min per episode. Definitely seems to be a WindowServer issue to me. -

I seriously hope i'm reading your post wrong but are you implying that windows server is to blame for the freezing???
Many people here, including my self, are not connecting to windows server and their machines are freezing a lot. this has nothing to do with windows server, this is a Mac problem
if i'm wrong about what you meant sorry, it just like your blaming windows in the quote above -
